34 weeks abdominal circumference on the 94th percentile

Hey ladies!
Worried first time mum here! My last scan showed that I was having a LGA baby and that my DS abdominal circumference was measuring on the 94th% while everything else was pretty much average. They asked me to monitor my blood sugar for 5 days and when I phoned them to give them the results they said that I don’t have GD. But I’m still kind of worried that my baby might have abnormal measurements..
here are the measurements he got:
•HC 333mm (90th%)
•AC 323mm (94th%)
•FL 66mm (49th%)
•Est Fet Weight 2800 (6lbs 3ozs)

I’d appreciate if you could share your opinions/thoughts on this as the mw says I might just be having a chubby baby but some people seem to think ultrasounds aren’t always 100% accurate!
Help!

DS2 was measuring SO BIG I was warned I might have to have a Csection. He came out 3.5kg - bang on average. I haven't a clue how usual that level of inaccuracy is, but it's possible!

@Thankyouthankyoujellybean thats good to hear! Did they induce you or at least did they mention it? I’m worried they might try to induce me based on these measurements and ending up having a harder (and more painful birth) to have a perfectly average sized baby! 😅

My DD was on the 90th centile for her belly all through my pregnancy, she came out 7.7lbs and no issues

Did have an emergency c section but it wasn't related to her being 90th centile, it was for prolonged waters breaking

She was average centile for everything else

She's just turned two now and still perfect

pinksheetss · 10/01/2024 11:08

Sorry to answer your other ones I was offered induction but it wasn't to do with her belly size (she actually stopped growing the last two weeks of my pregnancy and was around the same time I got Covid which I think was why!)
I got a sweep which brought on labour because of this so induction never happened

I also got the blood sugar test due to her belly size but this was fine also

Thankyouthankyoujellybean · 10/01/2024 12:37

My waters went and nothing happened for 24hrs so I was induced via drip but it was nothing to do with size.

The 'funny' thing is that I had had a low papp-A score with DS2 and was having extra scans in case he wasn't growing well. I started the pregnancy stressed that he would be very small and ended it stressed that he would be big. Bah!

They told me my babies stomach was off the scale and was measuring 42 weeks at 36 weeks. Head was always 50th centile though and femur 99th centile. I didn't have gestational diabetes. They said he would be big and was already 7lb 10oz at 36 weeks.
He was born 39 weeks exactly at 8lb 6oz

@Thankyouthankyoujellybean Yes!! Ive been having the same issue. Mw measured my belly and 2x she sent me for growth scans because she believed DS wasn’t growing as he should and both times baby measured bigger than average! So I’m always left of either end of the spectrum - worried that he’s either too small or too big!

@pinksheetss I’m worried also because if I had GD then I could put a cause to baby having bigger than average tummy but since I don’t I just don’t know what to think! When I called mw to tell her my blood sugar results she also ’let it slip’ something about baby’s legs measuring short so now I’m feeling even more confused!

@Elisabeth3468 I’m starting to think that maybe I shouldn’t be taking all these measurements so serious and focus more on the overall picture. Baby movements are great, his heart rate has always been good so I will try and focus on that. It’s a bit hard though when mw and doctors make a huge deal out of something that’s not 100% correct and because of that I end up stressing myself for what could be nothing

I’m in a very similar position… 38 weeks and suspected big baby. I’ve found these two resources useful:

Evidence for Induction or C-Section for a big baby

and

Dr Sara Wickham on Inducing Labour

I’ve also just read Sara Wickham’s book Inducing Labour (she’s a midwife and researcher) - it was 99p on kindle and really informative. There’s a specific chapter on big babies.

What is the Evidence for Induction or C-section for a Big Baby?

What is the evidence for induction or C-section for a suspected big baby? My doctor said I need to be induced because I have a big baby, is that true?

p.s. my first baby measured 90th percentile on scans and was born at less than 50th percentile.

Omg I could have written your post myself!

I had my third growth scan at 35+1 and my measurements were as follows;

HC - 96th
AC - 94th
Femur - 31st

Overall its puts me just under 90th centile which I have been all along so on my chart it seems he's growing perfectly but because of the over 50 centiles drop in femur vs AC they wanted to test me for GD (never been tested previously as under 90th is within normal range).

So I had to do home glucose monitoring. All my results were well under the target which suggests I don't have GD. I've sent them my results and just waiting to hear back.

I'm freaked out as to why there's such a huge drop in femur length as at the previous growth scan it was in the 66th centile. However the sonographer measuring even said that her measurements might not be accurate due to the position he was in and she didn't seem concerned so I'm trying not to be either. I did ring to ask what the actual measurements were as it wasn't on my notes and the femur has grown each time between scans but they said its not linier and has to follow the curve instead.

I think I just make big babies. My husband was 10lb when he was born and is over 6ft as am I 5ft9 so I'm wondering if its down to that!

thatneverhappened · 10/01/2024 19:00

They're really not accurate. I had a growth scan 2 days before delivery. They said an 8lbs 7oz baby with a 100th centile head and 85th centile tummy. Then out popped an IUGR baby with a 100th xentile head, a 2nd centile tummy weighing 5lbs 13
