Just wondering your experiences.
I'm just so paranoid about health of baby due to my body. already suffered a past miscarriage.
How are you coping ? Has your diet changed ? Unfortunately my diet hasnt really improved. Still living off crap.
I'm also pre diabetic.
Has baby experienced any issues ?
I asked my midwife to refer me to a dietician but they have declined .
I am under consultant led care. Have my second scan now on Tuesday

@KJ00 my BMI was 37 at my booking appointment and I was also consultant led because of it. Experienced no major issues (outside of what you'd expect in pregnancy) and had a vaginal birth, on gas and air, in the midwife-led unit. I only gained a stone through my pregnancy and am now one stone lighter than my weight at my booking appt 3 weeks after giving birth. From what I gathered from my many scans and appointments, you're just very slightly more at risk of certain conditions if you're 'obese'. Many of the midwives and doctors I spoke to were a bit scathing of the BMI measure as well and I was asked by a consultant on more than one occasion why I was consultant-led...

Hello there!

Congratulations for your pregnancy and sorry for your past loss💐 🙏💛

I'm also obese (bmi of 38) and this is my second pregnancy. With my first one I was also obese (I think with a bmi slightly inferior) and had no issues with the pregnancy that were related to my obesity. I gained very little and lost considerable weight after birth (although I regained it in the consecutive years).

With this one, though, I'm also pre-diabetic and I'm worried about getting gestational diabetes and then it evolving to type 2 diabetes for life (I have a family history). I'll be having more tests next month, to actually confirm if there's a GD diagnostic.

My midwife gave me a standard diet and some recommendations regarding the frequency of my meals, but I've decided I'm going to consult a private nutritionist to "do something" with help, because I feel utterly lost with food: I'm afraid of eating too much or too little or the wrong foods or the wrong combination... 😬

How far are you? I'm 19 weeks. How do you know you're pre-diabetic? I mean, have you had some altered results, like me, with your tests? Or did you know before pregnancy? Did your midwife explained why she didn't want to refer you to a dietitian? (I'm not in the UK, so I'm not familiar with what's the protocol there).

Thank you for starting this thread, by the way, I hope we can find similar stories and keep each other company throughout this process 😊

Have a look at Sarah Wickham.

Have you access to any resources re food as part of your pre-diabetes?

I'm "only" overweight but had good nutrition support through a local council scheme attached to the midwives.

There are widely published guidelines on activity in pregnancy - 150 minutes per week, can just be brisk walking - and what to eat (basically a wide variety of foods, plenty of fruit and vegetables, wholegrain, proteins and dairy, avoiding sugary snacks and drinks and avoiding blood sugar spikes (so if you're going to have something sweet have it after a meal)).

What kind of info are you looking for? Perhaps I can share some of the links I was given.

@MsNeis I'm 13 weeks
I used to be pre diabetic. In the months before I fell pregnant I completely cut out sugar and diabetic clinc was happy with my results. She didn't think I was pre diabetic any more. I had bloods done at my booking appointment and nobody has mentioned an issue so I'm assuming they came back fine.
Midwife during my first appointment didn't even mark down that I was diagnosed with pre diabetes.
She also marked down in my notes my diet was 'good'
Despite the fact I told her my diet wasnt great and had been made more awful since getting pregnant as I have had bad food aversions. I've literally lived off fast food and other junk as its the only thing my stomach could tolerate I'm first trimester. I'm in uk and I haven't been offered to see a dietitian.
I'm told I will be offered a gb test at 28 weeks

I can't speak for your midwife as I don't know what area you live in but I'm a midwife and we don't have a dietician that we can refer people to. It's just not a thing I'd be able to offer. Have you asked your GP if they can do a referral?

chickpea1982 · 11/01/2024 16:19

Having just been through this recently myself, I believe they are meant to offer a dietician referral if you have gestational diabetes. My midwife brought my test forward a few weeks because my baby was measuring big, though I wasn't diagnosed until a few months later in the end.

Are you "obese" or obese and in a bit of denial?

Sorry to miss the point, but you are either obese or you are not. Although you are not morbidly obese, you are still obese.

More to the point, hope all goes well, I'm sure it will all be fine in the end.
