Cyclogest and Pregnancy Symptoms

Hi all.

I am just trying to get an understanding of how taking cyclogest from very early on in your pregnancy can impact upon symptoms.

Does it make your symptoms almost false, because the cyclogest takes over? Ie could you have a miscarriage and not realise it because the cyclogest will keep the symptoms going?

Can your body adapt to the additional progesterone? So initially the symptoms can feel very noticeable but then wear off?

I’ve had 3 previous miscarriages and am worried the Cyclogest will stop me being able to tell I’ve miscarried. I never bleed, it’s only ever MMC, but the loss of symptoms is my clue.

Really interested in anyone’s experiences.

Thanks

My consultant told me that if I was going to miscarry because of abnormalities in the baby, that the cyclogest wouldn’t prevent that. I took from that that it only prevents miscarriages linked to hormone deficiencies and so wouldn’t prevent bleeding if you were miscarrying for another reason. For what it’s worth I don’t think the cyclogest has given me symptoms particularly about from bad constipation - I took it from 4w but the tiredness/nausea only kicked in at 5/6 weeks as would normally be expected. Good luck! X

@graceinc22 thanks x my worry is that I don’t bleed when I miscarry anyway, the only way I’ve ever ‘sensed’ ive miscarried is when my symptoms go away. But if the cyclogest sort of ‘takes over’, I’m not sure if I’d still get that drop in symptoms. could the symptoms continue and mask a miscarriage, I suppose is my question.

@HashB I’m so sorry to read about your miscarriages 💔 it’s absolutely heartbreaking and changes u forever.
on the cyclogest I started it at almost 5 weeks and would say it made my symptoms worse for sure (sickness/tiredness etc) however what I would say is I think the positives out way the negatives as in it will help hold a viable pregnancy in a case where progesterone isn’t high enough to sustain it so I definitely felt like I’d rather be on it than not. Like you I’ve only ever had MMC so it was at scan stage that I found out but if you’ve had previous MC then they should be offering u regular early scans to keep u reassured. I had scans every week from 7 weeks this time and I’m over 34 weeks at the min. I would Ask and insist on regular early scans if not being offered. Sending love and lots of positive energy xx

I'm currently 11+4 and have been on Cyclogest since before we had our transfer. I kept feeling really nauseous right from the start and I assume this will continue until I stop the medication. (I'm 800mg of Cyclogest as well as Prolutex, though.)
My nausea and my other symptoms are slowly going and I'm only feeling nauseous in the evenings now. I would assume, if you have a history of miscarriages, your doctor will check you more often. (I get a scan at every appointment, for example,...my gynaecologist is quite keen on checking that it's still OK. I had one this week and will have another next week.)
The progesterone won't stop a miscarriage if it's due to issues with the embryo.

HashB · 04/01/2024 20:39

@DmcinT thank you xx and I’m sorry that it sounds like you’ve had similiar experiences, although how lovely that you’re now at 34 weeks.

Can I ask if you felt like you adapted to the cyclogest? The last 10 days I’ve felt rather sickly, light headed, tired, sore boobs. Today I’ve only got sore boobs so it makes me wonder, is today just a blip? Have I maybe got used to the high progesterone? Is this maybe another miscarriage?

I’ve got my first scan next Tuesday, but you know how it is, if I can obsess then I will…

DmcinT · 04/01/2024 21:06

@HashB I absolutely know the obsessing, I’d have a scan every week and within hrs of them I’d be convincing myself something was wrong, I can’t lie those first 14-16 weeks felt very long but as each week passes u do get more and more hopeful and it does start to feel real❤️
I can’t say I adapted to the cyclogest to be honest, I would have an odd day of not feeling as ill but the over riding feeling from the last 8+ months is just feeling sick, unfortunately it has never left me but I do think the majority of ppl lose those symptoms around 12-14 weeks (I was on cyclogest until 28 weeks)

Hi, I’m currently going through this at the moment. I’m currently 5 weeks pregnant but have had 3 previous miscarriages. I’m worrying if I have enough symptoms and if the symptoms I do have are because of taking the progesterone! Such a nervous wait for my early scan next week.

Clarabelle10 · 02/04/2024 18:56

Hi everyone, I have just gone through my first cycle of IVF with a fresh transfer and I was put on cyclones from the day of egg retrieval. It's now 2 weeks later and it's my official test date - I've tested positive and I'm so delighted!! The only thing is, the hospital are now stopping my cyclones. My understanding was that it should be taken throughout the first trimester to support the new pregnancy. I am so anxious about this and when I call, the nurses just tell me it's "fine" and "my body will produce the progesterone". I'm really unhappy and feel like I don't understand this as there is a chance it could cause miscarriage

HashB · 04/04/2024 18:56

Hi @Clarabelle10 congratulations! That’s so exciting. It was my understanding IVF patients took it for a period in to pregnancy as well but I’ve never had IVF, I’m just basing this on friends/what I’ve read on here. Keep pushing them x

Hi again, sorry I’m just laughing at the “cyclones” autocorrect in my last post! I of course meant Cyclogest 🤣🤣 I called the clinic for a third time and finally was given a cyclogest supply for 4 weeks which is the date of my first scan. I feel so much better now I have it but they were really of the belief that my body would now produce its own. Anyway thank you for the advice/support @HashB I feel much better now I have it

Cosmos24 · 01/07/2024 07:40

How did it all go?

I've had 2 miscarriages while taking cyclogest (and 1 without) and pretty sure I'd stopped feeling so sick when I miscarried with those too. It did stop me bleeding with both of them so I only got diagnosed on scan. Hope yours worked out :) x

Maybe, for some symptoms, because the side effects of progesterone are common to pregnancy.

Have you been offered early reassurance scans?

I hope you get the outcome you want- I took progesterone in my 3rd pregnancy after 2 MCs and have a healthy baby now. I hadn't dared to hope, and felt anxious throughout the pregnancy. If I could go back now I'd do more to try to distract myself, look after myself and actively relax.

Aww congratulations, that's great news!! Can I ask, did you take cyclogest from ovulation or from BFP? I'm meant to be taking it from ovulation, but getting a bit confused!

Thank you! I took it probably from a few days after testing positive. Depending on your history though I do know some people are told to take it immediately from ovulation to help with implantation. It’s different for everyone.

Yeah this is what I'm trying to figure out as I've had 2 consultants say different things - one from ovulation and one from positive test...

HashB · 02/07/2024 11:08

Then I think I would go from ovulation. It can’t harm?

Cosmos24 · 02/07/2024 19:00

Yeah I think that's what I'm going to do, I just don't know if it will mess up my cycle if I don't get pregnant? But I guess I'll just try this month and see what happens and if it messes up my cycle then next month I might not. Thanks :D

JenRi · 08/08/2024 08:01

Hello all,

Just came across this as I'm in the 2ww of my first IVF cycle and was told to take 2 x 400mg of cyclogest from day of egg collection (10 days ago now) which I have been doing.

The last few days I've been really tired, headachey, sore boobs and suddenly today I feel fine. Did anyone found they got used to it at all and side effects lessened? Or am I just having a good day?

Clarabelle10 · 08/08/2024 13:00

Hi @JenRi I remember going through the same thing. One day I'd have symptoms, the next day nothing. There's so many things at play after treatment that there's just no way to tell if it's the cyclogest or something else!! It's such a hard time of waiting, I hope you are doing alright. Just keep going with your Cyclogest and taking it easy. I was really lucky and got pregnant first time (now 22 weeks) and I honestly didn't have any definite/consistent symptoms of being pregnant for weeks and weeks. Wishing you the very best of luck with this cycle

JenRi · 08/08/2024 13:24

@Clarabelle10 this is reassuring thankyou!

I am alright, kinda really hope it works but also know that many people aren't successful first time and you know I won't necessarily be one of the lucky ones.

So glad everything is going well for you though🙂.

I thought it could also be a combination of after effects from trigger injection (should be just about out of my system now!) and maybe just stress. Egg collection is a lot to put yourself through, then you've got the anxious wait for whether collected eggs fertilise and then more anxiety as to whether you have anything to transfer. Also probably had mild OHSS which seems to have settled down a bit now. Maybe my body's kinda recovered and processed all that now and that's why I feel better and I just need to wait and see what the test says!

Clarabelle10 · 08/08/2024 20:12

@JenRi I totally understand your thinking to protect yourself from being too upset and disappointed, hoping for you that it works though! If not this time there will be another go. How many eggs made it to transfer day? I was low ovarian reserve so was so delighted to get 3 healthy embryos out of 5 eggs collected.

Definitely, it's the most anxious and emotional time I've ever experienced. Looking forward to hearing how you get on🙂

JenRi · 09/08/2024 09:10

I have low ovarian reserve too and they only got two eggs in total, both fertilised but only one made it to day 5 which is what was transferred. They said it was a good quality embryo so we'll just have to see. I was also pretty pleased we got something to transfer 🙂

HopefulllHolly · 09/08/2024 15:39

@JenRi I only got 2 mature eggs and only one made it to 5 day blast - I’m now 16 weeks pregnant. So I am keeping my fingers crossed for you. ☺️
