Hyperemesis sufferers - a few questions

Hi all, I am 6 weeks into my second pregnancy. I had hyperemesis first time round and had a really miserable pregnancy because of it. For the past week or so I have been having terrible nausea but so far I haven't thrown up. I'm just wondering if this is a good sign that I won't begin vomiting because last time the vomiting started from the first day I had nausea.
Also has anyone tried taking Vitamin B6? I am going to discuss it with my doctor. I googled it and see very mixed references to it. Some say it is excellent but I saw a posting from a doctor saying it can cause neurological problems.
I seem to be keeping the vomiting at bay by eating very frequently and sleeping a lot. The eating worries me though because I am already overweight and I worry about putting on a lot if this continues. It wasn't an issue last time round as I was losing weight rather than gaining. Any tips on snacks that help with the sickness but don't pile on the pounds?

i wish i could say that it def wont go from nasuea to hepermesis. but with dd1+2 i was throwing up before i even got a BFP. with dd3 the nausea wasnt so bad to start with, then i got to week 8 and started being sick. i ended up in hospital dehydrated and diagnosed with Hyperemis Gravidium, and put on stemital.

this time i am crossing my fingers that i dont get it again.

i do feel for you though, as its an awful thing to go through.

I saw GP as soon as BFP with DD, as a prevention for the HG I had with DS. Cyclizine worked in that it kept me off the drip and therefore out of hospital, as I was with first pg.

Food that worked to some degree (you've prob heard these):

Coke (pref flat but must be actual full fat Coca Cola rather than any diet or supermarket version)
Plain crisps
Digestive biscuits
Hot water
Ice

Understand your worries about putting weight on but I think staying hydrated has to take priority. In any case, the food that worked for me were literally one packet of crisps, one crisp at a time over the course of the day.

There is a def link to tiredness so try to rest as much as you can (easier said than done with toddler I know!)

Good luck

I tried B6 but the smell of the tablets made me sick so I didn't get far with them! I was in hosp on a drip and took cyclizine in the end.

Plain foods helped me a lot - and eating little and often. I worried about putting on too much weight as I was starting out overweight to begin with, but I'm now 34 weeks and have only put on 1 stone 1 lb overall - so I think your body evens it out and knows what it needs at each stage. For now, what your body needs is to rest and keep it's fluids up, so do whatever enables you to do that and worry about the other stuff later.

Good luck

I lived off pepsi/coke.
It was all I could drink tbh.
Doc said not to use diet though because I needed the sugar or something.

Hi there
I had to join in. I am 14+ weeks pregnant with my second child. I had a fantastic first pregnancy. But OMG this time has been awful. I have suffered from 24/7 nausea since day one. I also vomit 2 or 3 times daily. Also Dry retching and heaving are a daily part of my life. I have tried cyclizine, phenergan, stemital which all knocked me out. I then tried meteclopramide but it made not difference. The doctors at my surgery will not prescribe B6 so I cant say whether this would help. I now dont take anything as there is little point. Just gaviscon as needed. I have tried the accupuncture, accupressure and reflexology. I must sound like a complete hyperchondriac {sp?} but I am normally such a fit healthy person with no medical problems ever. I have lost 7 lb during this pregancy. Luckily I have not needed to be admitted to hospital as I can keep myself hydrated enough (Just). I have been off work for 8 weeks now. There is no way I can return untill I am over this. However, on a positive note. I do feel as though I am slightly better the past day or so. I am really hoping that that is the end of it. I have my first scan on thursday so am looking forward to seeing the baby. I have so much sympathy for anyone suffering with severe ms as I truly understand how awful it is.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 18/03/2008 17:06

I had it twice, not so badly the second time.
Statistically it is more likely to be less bad the second time, but obviously that is on average so you may get lucky or not.

B6 - yes. And apparently the American official safe dose is higher than the UK one, and it is more likely to work if you take more. The thing about neurological problems is a new one on me though, and obviously you would want to know more about that.

Do not worry about putting on weight, truly. However, rice cakes were good for me, so you might want to give them a try and they're not fatty of course.

Congratulations on being pregnant

I'm 24 wks into my 2nd pregnancy and had HG last time too. It's been worse this time (more intense, earlier on) but I have been able to find something that keeps me out of hospital if I drink it as well as using Ondansetron (Zofran)- ice cold squash, with lots of ice cubes.

I have been admitted to hospital 5 times so far but since starting the squash therapy have managed to stay hydrated enough to stay out! Even with Zofran been puking about 8 times a day but it has calmed down enough for me to now consider leaving the house

Apparently extremes of temperature can help- so either drink something really hot or really cold. Have you looked at the self help tips on www.hyperemesis.org.uk they really helped me.

Good luck, I know how miserable it can be. How long did it last with your first?

x

I didn't have any sickness or even feel sick with my first and then was admitted to hospital with hyperemisis with my current (second pregnancy). It didn't start properly until after 12 weeks though and had gone by 16! Short but horrible. I found that the anti-travel sickness/acupuncture bands helped me and had no side effects for the baby. Worth a try.

Good luck! Hope it all goes OK.

mamamufin · 18/03/2008 18:52

Poor you iceandslice I am in awe at how you cope. I am really not that bad. Will try the squash thing. Suiedonn try not to worry about the weight issue, the babe is much more important at the mo.
Take care & I Hope it fades soon.

AHLH · 26/03/2008 18:59

Suiedonn, I am 15 weeks with first baby and have had awful hyperemisis . Been hospitalised 3 times, totalling 24 days, over a 5 week period. I am home now, and it has begun to ease off. In hospital they gave me B6, but the tablets were so big & smelly I just threw them up! I second the hot/cold drikns idea too. I find peppermint tea is good, and chilled Whole Earth organic lemonade and ginger ale.

EBenes · 29/03/2008 23:15

Very horrible hyperemesis till week 20 then a lot of very slightly less bad vomiting all the way to 40 weeks with my first baby. Now I have a toddler, I'm worried about coping if this pregnancy is successful and the sickness is as bad. I think this time I would ask for medication, but don't know what - if anything - is safe. I know they prescribe much more readily in America, but they don't have the same history of medical tragedy we have in the UK. I just feel there is no way I could look after a 2 year old and be throwing up every 5-10 mins like last time.

madcol · 29/03/2008 23:23

Accupuncture. Sounds horrible but really worked. I was so sick I would have gladly stuck pins in my eyes if it made me feel better, I was amazingly back to normal within days.

I am a ' regular' doctor and don't understand how it works- all I know is that it did and would have it again at the drop of a hat .

EBenes · 30/03/2008 11:38

Fantastic idea! I will definitely try that. I know a GP who is very pro acupuncture, I did not know it could be used for morning sickness.

Peachy · 30/03/2008 11:42

Have you looked at the blooming awful website for vitamin b6 info? Loads on there iirc (just google it).

have had HG 4 times and its awful, you have my sympathy.

the aldy who satrted the blooming awful site found homeopathy worked wonders- and some people like the morning well CD. those preggie pops sweets did OK for me for a week or two, which at least was some respite.

The best tips are really don't worry about your weight with HG!; drink loads as the fluids are what matters healthwise (being on a drip is no fun I assure you); sleep laods as link between tiredness and HG has been suggested; eat foods high in fluids if fluid a problem- ice pops, lettuce, melon; and just eat what you fancy, when you can.

good luck!

This is so encouraging, had mc in october, then was really sick in January, did pregnancy test. Have had awful hg, ended up hospitalised on a drip (my local hospital is really nasty)I've also been off work for 3 months! tried to go back to work and ended up being sick on the platmform at Morth Greenwich! It's just so frustrating, I want it to stop. I'm at 18+3 and still being sick, how long does this normally last?
