I just bought lots of stuff off Vinted. You can get 'good' brands eg white company, Jojo mama Bebe for a fraction of the price. Having said that when they're babies they grow so quickly that supermarket stuff is probably fine

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 01/01/2024 10:35

Babies are only in their first size clothes for a few weeks, and they are also quite leaky . You want quantity rather than quality!! Sainsbury's stuff was nice. Maybe save your pennies for when your baby is a bit older and clothes last for months rather than weeks.

George at Asda is great and they do multipacks for quite a good price, tbh I find all supermarket stuff good quality! M&S and next are good also but a bit more pricey but honestly its just not worth the money when they are so young IME - shit stains etc πŸ˜‚ Congratulations!

RandomMess · 01/01/2024 10:39

2nd hand is best because you can see they've worn and washed well.

minipie · 01/01/2024 10:46

Agree with 2nd hand. Soft and cheap. Small baby clothes are outgrown so fast, there is no need for them to last and be top quality. Also I binned a few due to explosive poos.

Just buy a load of cheap ones with a few more special ones for when you are seeing visitors etc.

I've found Mothercare at Boots to be the best

Originalusername89 · 01/01/2024 11:24

Agree with PP on second hand for tiny baby things.

However in answer to your question, Tesco do a range called 'elevated essentials' (I think) Ribbed vests and sleepsuits in white and simple neutral colours. They're soft comfy and come up really well wash after wash. (I find the supermarket multipacks loss their stretch or shrink)

I also find Next is worth the price for quality and lasting the wash, but does come up large.

StartedWithACrisp · 01/01/2024 13:32

John Lewis and M&S do quality cotton ranges. But as others have said, this stuff just gets sicked and pooped on so much that in the early stages the multipacks from supermarkets are fine. I was quite impressed with the feel of the sainsburies TU baby clothes and the designs are not cheap looking.

modgepodge · 01/01/2024 13:36

I love jojo maman Bebe stuff, but it’s wasted on newborns. My daughter lived in Tesco stuff when she was tiny as it was our nearest supermarket! That and hand me downs.

when they’re older, I like m&s, jojo, joules, next, but they’re all so expensive for just a few wears which is all they’ll get in the tiny sizes.

BabyD6 · 01/01/2024 16:47

Thanks all! Really helpful!
The Asda ones seem really soft so going to order from there! You’ve definitely given me a little reality check of they don’t need so many nice clothes when they’re newborn πŸ˜‚πŸ™ˆ Thank you!!!

Any of the supermarkets are pretty good if I'm honest. Next is great quality but it is expensive when they are so little and grow so fast

Guibhyl · 01/01/2024 22:15

I buy good quality but I buy second hand as I find it washes better and you can sell it on for as much as you bought it. If you buy Asda then you’ll still pay Β£10 for a pack of sleepsuits and you’ll struggle to sell them on for 50p each. Better to buy decent brands that you can then sell for what you paid basically!

I buy Next, Baby Mori, John Lewis, M&S and I also buy merino wool as it’s good for temperature regulation. I also have a few nice bits from Zara and Petit Bateau and those brands do sell well second hand but I’m not as impressed by the quality. Mori in particular is excellent quality but Next is my next favourite, excuse the pun.

Guibhyl · 01/01/2024 22:17

Stuff like sleeping bags and snowsuits in particular are well worth doing as second hand purchases. An Asda snowsuit will cost Β£15+ and you will struggle to sell it for more than Β£2 whereas I have bought Engel wool snowsuits for Β£30 and sold on for Β£35!

buckingmad · 01/01/2024 22:18

Next. If you know you’re going to have more children then they’re worth the little bit extra. I’ve not bought any new for my second baby and they all washed up perfectly. No poo stains or milk stains. Whereas cheaper brands just didn’t wash as well.

sleepandcoffee · 01/01/2024 22:21

I love second hand John Lewis , Frugi , next and marks and Spencer's . Just don't go crazy in the first few sizes - I have so much stuff worn once that need to be put back on Vinted !

SecondUsername4me · 01/01/2024 22:21

For patterned sleepsuits I went to Next. Fold over cuffs so no need for mittens. Nice bright colours and patterns.

Basic whites - supermarket. Asda or Tesco work fine.

I did sleepsuits for the full 6months - coloured ones in the day and white in the night. Used them all again for dc2.

Patriciaspantry · 01/01/2024 22:23

Petit Bateau (if you can source in uk) baby clothes - sleep suits and vests are very good quality indeed - especially the wrap vests for new borns.

LonelyBones · 01/01/2024 22:27

Asda! It doesnt bobble, or shrink. And washed a million times over, still looks nice enough to keep/hand down.

Also, super reasonably priced.

You need to save your money for all those baby swimming, soft play, baby massage classes. It all adds up 😩

bettynutkins · 01/01/2024 22:40

Another vote for Asda!

whiteboardking · 01/01/2024 22:57

Asda. They'll poo on everything. Barely wear more than 6 weeks. I got bundles off eBay

ActDottie · 01/01/2024 23:09

As others have said second hand stuff. I got a lot of white company and mini Boden on Vinted. Then the only stuff I’ve got new has been from TU or George - mostly just packs of sleepsuits etc.

I bought a lot of John Lewis in their sales for a few years ahead. They washed so well, kept their colour - just brilliant. And the same price as supermarkets if you get them clearance (now is an excellent time)

RiderofRohan · 02/01/2024 00:01

I don't think there is any rationale for buying brand new. Another vote for Vinted. You can get tons of new or hardly used stuff on there. Truth is people buy and receive too many clothes their babies don't ever get to wear.

Kite is a lovely brand. Excellent quality and a lot of the babygrows have zips, which will make 3 am changes convenient.

Also JoJo Maman and the White Company.

Passingthethyme · 02/01/2024 00:03

Honestly just get good quality material (natural, cotton, wool etc), and go cheap. They won't wear them for long and depending on the baby it may keep getting them messy with vomit or poo!
