Hi all.

My partner and I went for our 20 week scan a couple weeks ago and we were referred to a specialist a few days later as the sonographer wasn't able to obtain certain views of the heart. The specialist found that baby has a heart defect, have been reassured it isn't a major issue. Once baby is born we would need to monitor as there could be a feeding issue/heavy breathing which can be corrected with surgery if needed however the heart functions fine.

Due to the above, we were advised baby has a less than 5% chance of a chromosomal condition. We were given an option for a test which will tell us whether baby has the condition or not and we have chosen to go ahead with this.

Before this, we were planning to tell extended family (Aunts, Uncles, cousins etc) however now we would like to wait until we do the test and receive the results so that we know what we could be potentially facing in the future. I have explained this to both of my parents and they both said they understood.

A week later, I had a heart to heart with my Mum and explained how me and my partner are in a better head space as we've read a bit more about the condition so we are clued up. My Mum then asked whether she could tell her brother and sister in law (my Aunt and Uncle). This got me a bit mad as I know she is excited but what urgency is there when we are still waiting to find out about the future for baby. I felt there was no sensitivity on her part. I basically said to her, well if you tell them what about Dad's side....how can you reveal this without explaining the situation as I would think most will ask is the baby ok/healthy. Sorry I just had to vent this out as I'm now beginning to fear she will be this overbearing/interfering grandmother in the future.

Thanks for reading.

She asked though, didn't she? And the answer is no. Start setting your boundaries if you're worried they won't be respected.

I'm sorry you're going through this.

Gently, think you may be overreacting here. She’s excited so she asked as you’re now in a better headspace, you said no, which is absolutely fine, now it’s done. Nothing here suggests overbearing/interfering. Also when you decide to tell people about the pregnancy, you don’t need to go into details about anything. Just say you are pregnant, they reply with congratulations and generally that’s it.
