Baths at 10 weeks

I'm currently 10 weeks and oh and I have escaped for 2. Nights
We don't have a bath at home, and for some reason in this pregnancy I've been permanently freezing. So I ran a hotter than hot scorching bath. Yesterday and today and only today just thought of the risks
Can anyone advise? It seems to directly
Link to neural tube defects. My oh tested the water and said wow that's boiling and couldn't understand how I'd say in it
Any tips or experience would be welcome thank you

Were you sweating in bath? Once you sweat, that means your body temp has risen which isn't great for your developing baby, no. Similar to having a fever. It's likely to be all fine. If anything bad happens at this age, you'd usually miscarry x

Definitely wouldn’t recommend a bath that hot especially in first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Your blood pressure may drop which will cause the baby to not get as much oxygen, less blood flow can cause distress to the baby, you increase the risk of things like spina bifida. If you overheat your blood flows close to your skin to help sweating to cool you down which in turn means you may feel faint by not getting enough blood flow to the brain which could result in you fainting, falling and hurting you and or baby.
just not worth the risks

OP- Finnish women SAUNA throughout their pregnancies and are fine. There was a massive study of women who used sauna frequently in Finland and they had no increased risks of still birth or defects associated with compromised neural tube development.

You are fine to have a warm bath.

What do all the pregnant ladies who live in hot countries do then?

I've looked and can't find anything on the NHS website suggesting that pregnant women should avoid sweating?

Oh god its completely fine sitting in a hot bath

You'll be fine OP absolutely fine

WonderingWanda · 29/12/2023 15:42

Many of us have been there, accidentally eaten something that we shouldn't, got drunk before we knew we were pregnant forgot the folic acid etc. I tend to think there's fuck all you can do about it now so try not to worry, chances are very slim one bath would be a problem. Just add it to the list of fun you aren't allowed to have now you are becoming a Mum....no time for baths once the baby arrives anyway. Fingers crossed all is well op.

I had plenty of hot baths in first pregnancy and this pregnancy too as I don’t like luke warm. Been fine. If you feel faint get out or leave door unlocked to be on safe side but you know what your body needs better then anyone else. Enjoy!

PickledScrump · 29/12/2023 16:00

Jesus the people on these boards 🙄

the main issue is that you could faint and hurt yourself. To raise your body temperature enough to harm the baby the water would have to be too hot for anyone to be able to sit in. It’s not recommended as it can affect your blood pressure. Just make sure any future baths aren’t so hot, but baby is absolutely fine.

Jaybantumi · 29/12/2023 16:03

Try to relax, I’m sure everything will be fine

Thanks everyone
I had read that a v hot bath in first trimester increases risk of neural tube defects
My intense googling found it's more between 3-7 weeks
And I wasn't sweating but I don't really sweat I just am so cold all the time
Thank you so much for your kind words
I've waited so Long for this baby i feel an idiot for risking with this
I just feel so cold all the time! I've lost 2 kg since I got pregnant with sickness so that's probably why

There's no evidence they are harmful, in fact traditionally Finnish women gave birth in saunas! Most the so called evidence comes from the USA where they are extremely risk averse and even they say may and possibly when it comes to anything hot - forgetting many women live in hot places.
