Anyone on a low dose of thyroxine 25mcg?

Hi all
I just just got a bfp yesterday (3weeks4days). I had a miscarriage at 6 weeks in September so anxiety has already hit in. I’ve had an underactive thyroid since I was 18 but have always just been on 25mcg. I spoke to my gp after my first miscarriage just to discuss everything and I wanted my thyroid checked (it was fine). At the time he said whilst unlikely to have had an impact, that my dose should have been increased and that next time to increase by 25mcg.
Now I’ve googled and researched I’m now concerned given that’s double my dose that it could do more harm than good. I’m ringing today to book a blood test and when in hopefully double check I should def increase by 25mcg but wondered if anyone had similar?

thanks all

You should increase your dose by a minimum of 30% in pregnancy. I was on 75mg and at a positive test I increased to 75mg/100mg on alternate days. I've had blood tests every couple of weeks in the first trimester to keep an eye on it and my endo just changed my dose down slightly after my last blood test I had last week. my next blood test is in 4 weeks I am currently 12+5. I think it's most important to increase in the first trimester especially as baby is relying on your thyroid to work for them until they grow their own.

Thanks for the reply @bringmearainbow
It’s the percentage that’s worrying me given I’m currently only on 25mcg so an additional 25 would be double dose. I’m going to take it from Sunday when I’d be 4 weeks but call the dr on Wednesday after the bank holidays here in Scotland to see what they say. All the health boards seem to vary slightly between 25mcg min increase of 30-50% of previous dose increase. My last level was 1.0 so on the lower scale anyway so terrified I’ll be on too much

@CJ3 you could try increasing to 25mg/50mg to alternate days so it's not such a drastic increase everyday then repeat bloods in a few weeks to see how it looks

@bringmearainbow thats what I was thinking. I wanted to ask today when I got my bloods but there was no doctors available. I may just do alternate days until I speak to them on Wednesday. Atleast it’s an increase but not drastic. I’d only be 4weeks 3 days on Wednesday so some people wouldn’t have even done a p test by then 🤦🏻‍♀️

Hiya,
I wasn't on any levothyroxine at all as my thyroid sorted itself out but when I got my bfp I had a blood test which showed TSH only slightly above the range. The
GP wasn't concerned BUT from research I realised it does need to be ideally below 2 soooo requestes and was put on thyroxine. Started at 25, went to 50 then endo put me on 75 as endo wants it down below 2 (it came down to about 4.3)
Now need blood tests every 4 weeks and will change dose accordingly.
Endo said that a higher dose is absolutely fine.
I was 5 weeks when started the thyroxine and 12 when endo put me up to 75mg.

I went from 150 to 225 during pregnancy. 25 is a tiny dose. You must be borderline. My body makes none at all so I only get what I take in medication.

CJ3 · 29/12/2023 21:41

Thanks @allatonce99 for the info. I always thought 25mcg was a tiny dose doubling just makes it sound extreme and I’m just super anxious due to my previous miscarriage.
Hi @caringcarer, yes I’ve always been on 25mcg since I was 19. I know a few people who have had babies having been on a much higher dosage and had their thyroxine upped by 25/50. I’m just anxious because I’m on a low dose taking too much will sing me into hyperthyroidism

Is your TSH well controlled at the moment?
the guidance is different for pregnancy. Normal non-pregnant levels are up to 4.4 (at my trust), and in pregnancy it’s advised for TSH to be under 2.5 in hypothyroidism.

Ive got Hashimoto’s, when I became pregnant my consultant upped my dose from 25 micrograms to 50 and it has been the best my TSH levels have been controlled in years! Not sure why they never did it sooner.
25 really is a tiny dose you’ll be fine! Just make sure they repeat bloods in 6-8 weeks after you up
dose!

@HP89 So I’m usually between 1.4-2 tsh but my last bloods a few days after my miscarriage was down at 1 - the lowest it’s ever been which is why I’m a bit concerned now that doubling may take me down below the 0.33 threshold 🫣

And that was without upping my dosage (as at that point I didn’t know the guidelines)

Hmm sound sounds like you could do with a specialist opinion!

CJ3 · 03/01/2024 13:34

So as an update my bloods from Friday came back at 3.1. I took an extra 50% dosage since then until today when I managed to speak to the dr. Am now at 4weeks 3 days pregnant and now so anxious that I definately should have just doubled my dose immediately and may have inadvertently harmed this little bean

Don’t worry (easier said than done!). My TSH was 4.6 at the start of my pregnancy (I didn’t know I was pregnant) and at recheck at 6 weeks was 1.7, now at 12 weeks and all looks good. 3.1 isn’t massively over so hopefully will all be perfect 👍🏻

CJ3 · 03/01/2024 21:06

Thanks @HP89 Fingers crossed. I’m trying to tell myself if it hadn’t been for Christmas I wouldn’t have even done a pregnancy test until Monday anyway so wouldn’t have been any the wiser but as you easier said than done. Just need to hope for the best I suppose
