Really suffering - piles and constipation

I'm 34 weeks and for the last week and a half I've had the most horrific constipation which has resulted in hemorhoids. I've never had them before this.

I had constipation in the first trimester and was given lactulose which I've started taking again but isn't doing much. I'm trying to drink as much water as I can but find it hard with the constant need to wee!

Is there anything anyone can recommend to help me please so this doesn't completely ruin my Christmas?! I'm due to see MW again on the 28th but 4 more days of this will be agony.

Prunes, prunes, and more prunes.
Then get some pile cream and suppositories.

AVeryPregnantXmas · 24/12/2023 07:51

Thank you @DustyLee123 I've never tried a prune so hope they're nice! Also hoping the shops will have them in on Xmas eve.

I’d have about 8-10 a day u til you get going, then drop it down to about 4-5.
Dont swallow the stone if they are still in!

cosylife · 24/12/2023 08:08

2nd that on the prunes although I went for the prune juice and downed 250ml every morning. My first pregnancy I suffered with constipation so badly so feel your pain. This time round though I’ve got the opposite problem 😳

Bearpawk · 24/12/2023 08:10

My mum is the same after surgery - I've been giving her tinned prunes and sliced banana with yoghurt every morning for breakfast
Dulcolax tablets
Loads of veg, less bread/ meat
Home made veg soup
Lots of hydration
Be careful with cereals, even if they advertise being full of 'fibre' they are very dry and don't always help.

AVeryPregnantXmas · 24/12/2023 08:11

Thanks everyone, I think I'll pick up prune juice too that's a good idea as it'll be easy to down if I'm not keen on the taste.

Sorry you're suffering too @cosylife

Scheriproct. It will work very quickly. Lactulose, water and orange juice.
I feel you. They are awful.
Remember to take it after the birth because that post baby constipation is like birthing the baby all over again.

God speed.

JubileeJumps · 24/12/2023 08:15

Have a bath with Epsom salts - miracle for piles.
Oh the glamour of pregnancy.

sheeplikessleep · 24/12/2023 08:18

Prune juice
Califig
Orange juice
Avoid bananas, rice.
Also, if you’ve got a little stool, put feet on that when you use the loo.
Good luck, constipation is awful.

yoshiblue · 24/12/2023 08:23

Definitely get into eating prunes daily and keep it up post pregnancy. I've suffered ever since giving birth 😭

Also think about buying a 'pooing stool', helps lift your legs up when you go. You can get them on Amazon but I have a small fold up kitchen stool from Dunelm. Sadly it's the most thrilling thing I've bought in years but really helps!

Ladyj84 · 24/12/2023 08:54

Anusol or germaloid...never had in any pregnancy other than the twin one and was horrendous. Germaloid worked for me

CornishTiger · 24/12/2023 08:57

Epsom salt bath.
More fluid in diet and buy Biotful kefir from supermarket ( yoghurt section? It helps keep my stomach happy.

Glycerin suppositories from chemist.

Bearpawk · 24/12/2023 14:31

@sheeplikessleep why avoid bananas ? I recommended them above as they help me. Sorry op if this is false info !

sheeplikessleep · 24/12/2023 14:35

I thought bananas bunged you up a bit?
Ive just googled and seems unripe bananas can make constipation worse, but ripe bananas helps constipation, who knew! We were both right 😂.
I just always thought bananas were a no no.

And applies, grapes, pears were a definite yes.

mrsmacmc · 24/12/2023 14:44

Try the prune puree pouches too in the baby food bit - more palatable than prunes and not as cloying as the juice.

When you go to the loo raise your feet up on a stool or couple of books

endofthelinefinally · 24/12/2023 14:50

Porridge, prunes, pineapple.
Cooked carrots, lentils, leafy veg.
Avoid bran and weetabix as they set like concrete.
Glycerine suppositories.
20ml lactulose daily.
Scheriproct ( presciption).
Walking as much as possible.

Giggorata · 24/12/2023 15:01

Second the use of a stool or buy a squatty potty or similar. The squat position unkinks the lower bit of the intestine, allowing easier elimination.

Anusol and similar suppositories have an ingredient that numbs painful haemorrhoids. Glycerin suppositories are helpful for softening hard stools.

Prunes and drinking lots of water are generally the most helpful things to ingest.

Emmab321 · 24/12/2023 15:04

Prunes and more prunes . Horrible things but do the job !

Nomagicflute · 24/12/2023 15:23

Date, piled with almond butter at the time you'd usually got to the toilet. Increased veg overall, plenty of water, any exercise.

RJ2023 · 24/12/2023 19:49

I have suffered from this too - hope you feel better soon (there's never a good time to be constipated but over Christmas must be awful!)

Raising your feet really does help and don't 'try' too hard on the toilet if you can avoid it

AVeryPregnantXmas · 24/12/2023 20:00

Thanks so much everyone, have managed to get things moving along with some of the suggestions and really hoping that means things will start to improve!

More fibre in your diet - I got psyllium husk capsules as part of a pregnancy supplements package and am taking 2-3 per day now on 3rd trimester.

Plenty of water- easy to get dehydrated when you're making all that extra blood.

LuluBlakey1 · 24/12/2023 20:13

Tinned prunes are best, dried ones can cause further constipation if not soaked.

Fluid is important - drink water.

I find this really helpful. I keep them in the house and if I am having difficulty chew one a day at night with a glass of water.

Consultant suggested two small bananas every day plus green veg- broccoli, cabbage etc and tomatoes.

If your piles are really painful ask the GP if it is possible to prescribe Sheriproct - it's amazing.

I feel you, I'm a few weeks ahead of you in pregnancy and also suffering. Germoloid cream is far superior to annusol in my opinion as it numbs the area. Hope that helps. Also wipes favourable for wipping
