Early bloody show/anterior placenta

Hi all, I’m a FTM and currently 31+4 weeks pregnant. I have an anterior placenta which sometimes causes reduced movements for me, I’d been into mau once around 2 weeks ago for this and baby girl was wriggling away I just couldn’t feel it.

Yesterday morning after going to the loo, I wiped and had a bit of blood mixed in with mucus. I phoned up mau and went in to be seen, I hadn’t felt baby girl but again they hooked me up and she’s absolutely fine. They did a cervical exam and my cervix is closed and the said I’m not showing early signs of labour. Had a growth scan and she’s looking completely normal for gestation. Fine. I went home.

This morning the same thing has happened but with more blood, cramps and not feeling her move again. I go in, they hook me up, she’s absolutely fine. They said they don’t know why I’m bleeding but to go home and come back again if it persists. Im home now and still can’t feel her move and it’s making me paranoid even though a couple of hours ago all was fine with her on the monitor.

Has anyone else with an anterior placenta experienced this level of lack of movement? Should I be phoning them back and saying I can’t feel her or is this my new “normal”?
Has anyone had a bloody show this early on before? Starting to worry I might go into early labour in the next couple of days and just feeling really anxious with it all! Sorry for the long message and thank you if anyone reads this far x

I haven't experienced this but when I have been in for any worries I've always been told that they would rather see a healthy mum and baby 10 times than not see them the time it mattered. I was in for reduced movements a few weeks ago and they specifically told me as I left to ring them if it happened again, 'even if it's in an hour's time.'

I'd give them a ring if I were you, even if just for a bit of reassurance. Sending hugs x

Hi @marymac97

I really understand your worry and anxiety. I can’t relate to the bloody show but from about 28 weeks I must have gone in at least 10+ times for reduced movement. I also had an anterior placenta. I was always told to not hesitate to go back if you can’t feel baby move again. Trust your instinct. In the end I was induced at 39 weeks due to the amount of times I had been in and my anxiety was through the roof. On the odd occasion baby decided to move for me I found that a cold fizzy drink and laying on either my right or left side helped me feel her! Hope all works out well for you x

I had anterior placenta with first pregnancy & it was so anxiety inducing. I went in a lot for reduce movement & was then consultant led & induced at 37 + 6 - had a great experience & couldn’t have asked for a better birth etc. I don’t have experience of the bleeding though. I was always told they would rather me go in & be checked and both be healthy etc than not. So please do go in & stand up for yourself you know your body better than anyone else.

I have anterior placenta again this pregnancy but up until now (30 weeks tomorrow) movement has been so much more noticeable & full on that I feel sick from it! Very thankful for it being an uneventful pregnancy until now and hope it continues.

@NoItsStillNighttimeDarling Thank you so much it really is making me feel so anxious, I felt her a lot last week and now hardly at all! I have felt her a couple times since I posted luckily but I will definitely be phoning back if I don’t feel her again. Thank you for your reply x

@raevans thank you, have a feeling I’m going to be a common visitor at the unit these next few weeks but like you say I’d rather trust my instinct and just go in. I’ll give the fizzy drink a go x

@snoopy18 thank you I will, I’m glad you’re feeling more movements this pregnancy it’s such a worry isn’t it I’d hate to have an anterior placenta again in a future pregnancy! Thanks for your reply x

Definately a worry and anxiety inducing. How are you getting on?

abbs1 · 23/12/2023 20:54

I had anterior placenta and was in 2-3 times a week from 30 weeks onwards up until I gave birth due to reduced movements. Was induced at 38 weeks.

marymac97 · 25/12/2023 23:33

@snoopy18 i tried to hold it off a little as I felt her yesterday but today things didn’t feel quite right so I phoned and they asked me to come in. I’m so glad I did as they did an exam and they’ve told me my waters have broken! Being kept in for a few days and doing lots of tests for infection. Feel so overwhelmed as they don’t know when baby is going to come now but will definitely be induced before 37 weeks, just hoping I can hold on until then 😅 xx

Good luck marymac!

My understanding is they will likely want you to give birth at 34 weeks if it hasn’t happened before, as by then the risks of broken waters (infection etc) are believed to outweigh the risks of early delivery. However I may be out of date. If this does happen, don’t panic, 34 weekers generally do very well. If you do have to deliver early and get a chance to plan it I would recommend a planned c section as safest for the baby. And do ask about steroid injections for baby’s lungs!

Oh wow so glad you went and got checked & followed your gut instinct! How exciting that you are almost there. Keep us updated & stay safe!
