Travelling to Abu Dhabi, unmarried and 24 weeks pregnant

Hi all,

Myself and my partner would like to go away in February when I am approx 24 weeks pregnant. We want to go somewhere that is warm enough for a beach holiday and after a lovely experience in Abu Dhabi last year we were thinking it would be a nice place to return to. My only worry is that I’ll be showing quite a bit by then (I’m already visibly pregnant) and we are not married. I am also worried about healthcare.

Has anyone been whilst pregnant and do you have any advice?

Many thanks! 😊

Tacky place to go on holiday. Is it really ethical to bolster the economy of a place where it’s illegal to be gay? Where slavery is legal? Why not look at the human rights record of the place first and then choose a different destination.

I agree.

How will they know you're not married?

What’s your concern? UAE hospitals are world class, maternity wards are all suites, not shared. But up to you to buy travel insurance.

It’s not illegal to have a baby there while unmarried. You don’t even need to know who the father is. https://www.thenationalnews.com/uae/government/2022/11/08/how-unmarried-mothers-can-apply-for-a-birth-certificate-for-their-newborns-in-the-uae/?outputType=amp

I know MN leans Islamophobic but the willful ignorance is embarrassing.

Edited

I found when travelling pregnant that insurance would cover birth costs but if my baby was born early and needed any kind of medical care they wouldn’t be covered. I couldn’t find a single insurance provider that would cover the as yet not born baby if they were then born and needed medical support. In the end I went to an EU country (we were part of it then!) with reciprocal arrangements.

I wouldn't have gone there while pregnant. Also don't go to countries that don't allowed abortion eg Malta, as if, god forbid, you miscarried abroad, you can be denied treatment and develop infections.

Even check the states in America. But it’s worth noting Muslim countries tend to be good for things like protecting the mother’s life over the baby’s when it’s clear the baby won’t survive or the baby is ectopic or the woman is miscarrying

@ConnieCroydon

This is not accurate info.
Also- surely as a family you'd agree which of the parents were working? If your husband disagreed with such a big thing then of course it's a problem

And no- custody is automatically 50/50 for expats now.

Fathers must be on birth certificates AND provide for their children.

I personally love the morals of the UAE and think it's so much better for women /mothers.

How many women would love to afford to be a SAHM??

Also- there's very few men with multiple wives. It's something that is discussed before a couple get married - I.e. is the woman open to this happening? And of course the man has to make sure they can provide. Much better then men here with their wives..and hidden mistresses..

What's wrong with arranged marriages?? Don't your parents love you and want you to have a good partner?

Most marriage in the UK (not arranged) end in divorce..so I'm not sure who you think is getting marriage right 👀

Fucking hell. I can't decide if this is a bloke or someone with Stockholm Syndrome...

No- I just live in the UAE and don't believe everything I read in the daily mail.

There are female only universities , sections on trains just for women, so many women and children only spaces.

If you've never visited then I don't think you can comment.

I work there and love it

Jellyx · 22/12/2023 21:23

The UK has terrible statistics for children and families. So so SO many broken families and deadbeat fathers.

I was shocked at the number of men with and enjoying their children (whilst their wife is at the spa / shopping with her husbands money).

You go to Dubai and you see families with fathers.

I didn't realise how much it was missing in the UK.

Jellyx · 22/12/2023 21:24

So - go to the UAE and enjoy yourself! There will be no issue with you not being married and excellent healthcare if this is needed.

Jellyx · 22/12/2023 21:26

I honestly think dailymail write crap about the UAE so you never go and don't realise how shit the UK is in comparison.

I flew back to a UK airport, the staff couldn't care less and the toilets stank of urine. That would NEVER happen in the UAE.

Me being catcalled would NEVER happen in the UAE.

A deliverly driver bumped and damaged my sister car this week and just drove off - would NEVER happen in the UAE.

All those complaining about how people are treated..especially women- go there and see for yourself. I've never seen women SO well looked after!

Of course. That's where most intelligent women do their research, naturally. However, if you work in the UAE I can see why you are posting this sort of rubbish. The words below are Foreign Office warnings from the UK govt.

It is illegal to post material (including videos and photographs) online that is critical of the UAE government, companies or individuals, or which relates to incidents in the UAE. This includes material which appears to abuse, ridicule or criticise the country or its authorities.

Obviously it's SUCH a free and wonderful place. I can see why you are not posting anything remotely critical @Jellyx

Jellyx · 22/12/2023 21:49

@Hatty65

I don't think the Dubai police are on Mumsnet 😅😅

And I'm from the UK and choose to now work in Dubai. I'm better paid and much better treated there.

If the UK was so great there wouldn't be so many of its citizens desperate to get out.

Jellyx · 22/12/2023 21:52

@Hatty65

Freedom is actually a 'walled garden' meaning rules are important.

There's not the murders, robberies, drugs etc that are all over the UK.

So- please do more research before making comments. I live and work there and honestly wish I'd made the move sooner.

I mean crime was low in Nazi controlled Germany but it doesn't mean I would have wanted to live there @Jellyx.

Ok. Well. I live in the UAE now and honestly think the UK is a dump in comparison.

I think women are extremely well treated and the country is one of the safest in the world.

So- enjoy your holidays if you go there! I did..then opted to move out there full time with zero regrets.z
