Hi

I have just received a call to say my glucose levels came back high and I have gestational diabetes but I won’t be able to see the diabetes nurse until the 2nd January now. The nurse just said be sensible diet wise - which is obviously going to be harder over the next week or so but of course I will.

i was just wondering what i need to cut out - so no roast potatoes for Christmas dinner? Can I have party food? I was planning on having a takeaway New Year’s Eve - what can I have?

I just feel a bit overwhelmed, I have been googling but some of the advice feels quite conflicting

any advice would be most appreciated

I wouldn't worry so much about Christmas Day. Just be sensible.

You can have carbs but limit them more post-Christmas dinner. If you're having roasties and a Yorkshire pudding with Christmas dinner, don't overload on crackers on the cheeseboard afterwards and so on. Carbs are the worst offenders as they turn to sugar and so many people forget this and just think they can't have cakes and doughnuts.

The easiest way to get things under control is with a combination diet but this is assuming you like a lot of foods. If you're eating carbs, eat fat and protein with it. Same with fruits - add some protein and good fats. It helps the breakdown of the foods and the other elements help to stabilise your blood sugar.

At present you obviously don't know if you'll be medicated or need to finger prick to test your blood several times a day yet but if you do, it'll be a lot easier to visually see the effects of certain foods and also certain combinations of foods which is really helpful.

I'd recommend looking at the gestational diabetes UK website and Facebook page. I found it really helpful when I had GD. They have really useful info on good things to eat, what is best in takeaways etc. I took a day off on Christmas Day!

Thanks so much just feels like the worst timing! I’m also really worried that’ll baby will need to come early and I won’t be able
to have a water birth - just really didn’t want an induction or c section if I can avoid it

Try and eat protein, that will help keep your sugar levels down. I always paired carbs with protein!

Congratulations on your pregnancy

I had gestational diabetes in both my pregnancies, my first was born at 34+1 nothing to do with gd. But a good weight for being born early. 5lb 4oz.

My second pregnancy I was induced at 38 weeks, induction was fine and he was born 8lb 4oz.

Extra appointments, scans and monitoring because of gd. And 2nd was born during covid.

Diatician told me quater of your meal can be carbs. Put meat salad ect with it to speed up carb digestion. X
