I can eat shop sandwiches...right?

Someone told me i shouldn't be eating supermarket sandwiches (m&s mostly) due to listeria risk. I googled and while there's nothing on the nhs there's some on other websites saying this...I know there's always a slight risk eating out or at others that they won't have washed or refrigerated foods properly but as someone with a long commute (so I don't take food to work) I've been eating shop sandwiches about once a week quite happily. Is anyone else avoiding them? Would doing so be paranoid?

Literally all I could stomach for weeks was Asda plain ham sandwiches, and I couldn't make my own because touching the ham made me sick!
Nothing happened to me or the baby, who's now 5.

Good to know! I've been dosing this one with coronation chicken sandwiches on and off for 20 weeks, so I hope they're fine!

But sure how is making my own sandwich any better? If I want a chicken sandwich and I can't use packet chicken the alternative is to cook it thoroughly but then I have to put it in the fridge which allows it to cool down and this encourages bacteria growth anyway so you can't win either way.
If I wash my lettuce under water how can you be sure the listeria is all washed away . Should I wash it in bleach?

Not everyone has access to a microwave at work and so I should just munch on breadsticks all fucking day? 😒

You can have anything if you heat it up before eating, really piping hot throughout. You probably don't want to do that to a sandwich though!

In the UK? Presumably this rules out LOADS of cold prepared food. What do you allow?

Yeah, I pretty much avoided anything pre prepared that I wasn't going to heat up before eating.

Even olives? What about sandwiches made and bought same-day?

Not from the deli section no. It's not about when they were made, it's a hygiene issue. You can't always trust the hygiene of these places. Something like a spoon being dropped on the floor and quickly wiped and still used.

I'll avoid sandwiches and other stuff that's a compsite of cold foods with lots of exposed surface area, but think I'm going to draw the line at not eating olives from jars or things like pre packed houmous. It just becomes too restrictive and I don't want to have to eat salad either piping hot or not at all!

Wash salad very well before eating.
