Bleeding at 35 weeks, 2nd child - has anyone else had similar? Need reassurance!

This is my first post on Mumsnet and I should probably apologise for its length, but I've done so much Googling on this that I thought I should seek some much needed closure here! I really hope some of you can help...

I woke up last Tuesday round 7 as normal, came downstairs and within a few minutes was vacuuming the cat hair off the sofa (I've become religious about removing cat hair since my first child, why I still have a bloody cat I'll never know) - suddenly I felt a little wet. I was bleeding, bright red, fresh blood, a little like the first day of a period. Don't panic, I told myself, as I woke my husband up to prepare him for a little mid-week drama. I popped a pantyliner in some clean undies and thought I'd wait a little to see if there was more. Sure enough five minutes later I discovered a small blood clot. We drove to the hospital and while I waited to be examined it seemed that the bleeding had stopped. Following an examination and monitoring of the baby (who was seemingly very happy to continue shoving its little heels into my diaphragm) they had ruled out placenta previa - my placenta has always been up and out of the way - and a serious placental abruption was also discounted as the bleeding had stopped, baby was fine and I had no other symptoms such as abdominal pain etc. I was asked to remain at the hospital for 24 hours, and while the overnight stay in the labour ward was uncomfortable, sleepless and noisy (15 mums giving birth that night! The screaming!)I was considered fine enough to return home the following morning with no real explanation as to what had happened.

I have been having a perfectly uncomplicated second pregnancy apart from much more nausea in the first few months than with my first child, and have also planned a home water birth. Now I feel confused, terrified to do anything even remotely physical and desperate for reassurance.

If anyone has had a similar experience please let me know...

didnt want this to go unanswered...have no personal experience other than bleeding in early pregnancy both times which resolved and was never explained. have 2 healthy ds now! but it sounds like you have done all the right things. i think it is a good idea to take things easily and natural to feel very discombobulated. If they have said that things look fine then I cant imagine there will be a problem with homebirth if things carry on normally.

I bled in my first pregnancy at 33 weeks, same as you not placenta praevia or a placental abruption. I never worried about it afterwards as my baby always moved well and I had no more. During labour there was a fair bit of bloody gunge but no problems. I had a hosp waterbirth. Second time round I had a small bleed at 20 w and continued without probs to a home water birth.

Btw although I felt I should probably not have any more sex during my first preg after a week of abstaining I did and although there was a bit more blood, no problems. It can often be an erosion on your cervix that bleeds. (a bit like a spot that bleeds when it is touched!) Second time around there was no way I was abstaining for 20w but never had anymore bleeding.

Wow, thanks to everyone for your replies, it has really helped. Maxbear, I had a hospital waterbirth with my first too. The one thing that has really made me laugh as well as very is that I'm certainly not getting any action in the sex department! Maybe I should start another thread on this...
