Heavy lifting and miscarriage. So worried

I had booked delivery to come ,Yesterday evening. Paid for a time alot after 6.30pm so that dh would be home. Courier came and left package at 4pm and left it sitting outside house didn't even knock. Water lies on our front and I had no option really but to carry it in at 5pm as it's electric and high value and it was raining.
It was 17kg but I'm not used to lifting any boxes like this so for me this felt really heavy. I tried to lift it , it tall didn't have to bend but I knew it was too heavy so put it on my foot and lugged it on my foot.
I started having cramping and some back pain and now today I still have back pain and mild cramping. I'm so worried I've had another miscarriage.

I'm only 9 weeks.
Epu is closed on weekends and last miscarriage they wouldn't even see me anyway since my cramping wasn't accompanied by bleeding.
Has anyone else suffered a early miscarriage from heavy lifting or could it be from the lifting itself. I've read ligaments soften but I'm very early in my pregnancy

I can appreciate you’re very anxious. I’ve had 6 miscarriages and two DDs. With my final successful pregnancy I was lifting dd1 who was 17kg (not all the time but in emergencies etc).

At 9 weeks your foetus is nestled in there nice and snug and while you may have strained your back it would be very unlikely that you’ve triggered a mc. Best thing to do is rest up and focus on the fact you’ve lifted something awkwardly and your back is protesting.

Nearlythere80 · 16/12/2023 12:21

It's probably just the lifting and the stress. Try to relax today

eurochick · 16/12/2023 12:26

The risk of lifting in pregnancy is to you as ligaments soften. It's not about the baby.

A lot of pregnant women will have an older child of around 17kg and will regularly lift them.

DustyLee123 · 16/12/2023 12:27

Sounds muscular, so keep warm and rest.

Marshmallowtoastie · 16/12/2023 12:55

My understanding is that the guidance is to protect you, because you’re more prone to injury, rather than the baby who is nestled safe. Try not to worry, just rest today if you need to

Thanks ladies , I've just been extremely paranoid as this is my first pregnancy . This baby is so wanted as its been years of ivf treatment with no success and one miscarriage last year. This is our final shot at having a family.
I guess what fuelled my anxiety is I came across a thread on baby centre and one women commented she had a miscarriage after carring her toddler and a bad of shopping. She said she spotted at 6 weeks, bled at 9 and eventually miscarried at 11 and it was due to carrying the shopping and child .
Another had commented that she miscarried after carrying a heavy object too so I left the thread feeling this seems to be quite common and wanted opinions on here from lots of mums

It seems common because unfortunately miscarriages are very common. People who've had miscarriages are looking for reasons why it happened and so blame the shopping or carrying a heavy toddler.

As PPs have said the advice not to lift heavy weights is to protect you as your ligaments are softening and you are more likely to injure yourself. You absolutely will not have harmed your baby. I know how hard it is to relax and enjoy your pregnancy after infertility and previous losses but please don't think that bringing in that delivery has done any harm. FlowersFlowers

I'm going to book a scan for next weekend and hopefully everything will be fine. I feel that should at least put my mind at rest so I'm not over thinking everything over Christmas

Heavy lifting doesn't cause miscarriages. Try not to worry 😘

I would expect that this was sadly a six week missed miscarriage that showed itself at 11 weeks.

sugarplum33 · 16/12/2023 18:02

You might have just pulled something, everything is softening and loosening and even relatively normal exertion can make you uncomfortable in pregnancy.

Try to ignore the anecdotal stories of women who have linked their losses to heavy lifting, babies are incredibly resilient and they'll be very well protected and cushioned. Unfortunately miscarriages happen and just because somebody may have miscarried after heavy lifting, does not mean the lifting caused the miscarriage.

Realistically many women have no option but to perform some heavy lifting in pregnancy and it really is much more of an injury risk for you than a risk for baby. My daughter is nearly 20kg and still partial to a carry and a tantrum so I've lifted her quite a few times this pregnancy. I do find this physically harder than pre-pregnancy but that's my aches and pains, baby is absolutely fine.

Try to relax and enjoy your pregnancy Flowers

moosey89 · 16/12/2023 18:20

Lifting does not cause miscarriage. Those stories are just of unfortunate timing making those women believe that the lifting caused a miscarriage, but it doesn't so please try your best not to worry. Really hope all is ok at your scan but if it isn't for any reason please remember you did not cause anything to go wrong, aside from drinking heavily (like binge drinking every night) there's very little you can do to cause a miscarriage. If it's going to happen it's because of chromosomal or other biological factors x

PointyMcguire · 16/12/2023 22:50

Please try not to worry, I was busy lugging bales of hay, 20kg bedding and 15kg feed bags for the horses throughout my pregnancy. DD is now 11mo and none the worse for it.

MoonstoneAndRoseQuartz · 17/12/2023 14:00

I believe its mainly due to possible injury as ligaments soften.
There is a small risk of miscarriage but it's thought to be small. I'd recently read up on this myself as several days ago i had to lift and carry a 20kg bag of dog food and freaked myself out after it. one study concluded that for the 70,000 women in the study who's jobs included heavy lifting 2, 000 of those went on to miscarry. There are other studies but its probably not concrete evidence that was definite causes for the miscarriages. Either way I now air on the side of caution. If it feels too heavy don't lift it. Everybodys body is different. One women might find a 10kg box heavy and another could be lifting 100kg because she's used to it. It's really individual. Rest up easy. I've been on bed rest for few days as I've had really bad back pain and cramping which has now eased off after few days. It's really frightening, I understand your concern

MoonstoneAndRoseQuartz · 17/12/2023 14:02

Oh , another study had stated that for every 100 women who are lifting heavy objects, 0.2% of those lead to miscarriage. So small risk

Heavy lifting does not cause miscarriages

heavy lifting is not advised because your body and ligaments are softer and more delicate

the woman on babycentre is not a doctor, just a sad, bereaved woman looking for an answer when the truth is that pregnancy loss is random, cruel and out of our control

otherwise no one with a heavy toddler would carry a second DC

put it this way- would you take in heavy boxes as a method of contraception?

Whataretheodds · 17/12/2023 14:13

Neither of them can possibly know this. It's rare to find out the cause of a 1st trimester miscarriage.

GreatGateauxsby · 17/12/2023 14:21

Try not worry

i was carrying a big bag of shopping (4-5kg) and my toddler yesterday (13kg). I have been doing similar for months.

I am over 30 weeks pregnant, fat and over 40... I am and will be fine so is baby.
