When did you tell your employer you were pregnant?

Recently found out I’m pregnant. I’m only 26 but been with my other half over 7 years, have a house we have recently renovated, both have stable jobs etc.

When did you tell your employer you were pregnant? I work for the NHS and my job isn’t physical, it’s office based and I work from home two days a week. I don’t know why but I am starting to feel really nervous about it. I think it’s because I am worried about being judged for being ‘too young’ 🤣. I think this probably has something to do with my hormones, my emotions are very up and down at the moment.

I told my boss at 5 weeks haha. But I worked in a challenging environment so sort of had to! I think you should say when you feel ready? Congratulations OP! Xx

I didn't both times (losses at 10 and 11 weeks), although I'd likely tell them in future at a time when I thought I was starting to show.

CurlyWurly1991 · 15/12/2023 13:54

In my first pregnancy I was 26 and I told my employer around 7 weeks (I was feeling quite sick and anxious and needed adjustments). Two members of management asked ‘was it planned’ 🤨
now I’m 37 and pregnant again. I couldn’t give a stuff what anyone thinks. Maybe that’s the benefit of age! I will tell them at 12w unless I am struggling due to fatigue/sickness etc and need adjustments. My job is generally not very physical although there are some situations that could need some modifications due to slight risks.

Toda11 · 15/12/2023 13:55

I told them about 10 weeks after an external scan confirmed all was well

Same here. It was last year, I was 10 weeks at the company Christmas do and I didn't wanna make up a BS excuse why I wasn't drinking so I got the scan and told everyone at the Xmas do which was quite nice!
I was worried about a loss, but I figured they were probably people I'd tell anyway if I did lose the baby so I didn't see that as an issue..

I told my manager at 8 weeks as I was feeling quite rough so thought it best to let him know. I have an office job so not physical at all but still hard to sit at a desk all day when you’re feeling nauseous! I also thought if anything did go wrong then I wouldn’t have to explain anything to him as he’d already know. But I didn’t formally tell my employer/HR in writing until I was about 16 weeks.

HellOfAnAngel · 15/12/2023 14:11

I didn’t tell my employer til I was 21 weeks. First baby, (wasn’t working when pregnant with second) I wasn’t showing, no health and safety issues to worry about, so I didn’t see any need and wanted to wait til after 20 week scan.

Daisychain98 · 15/12/2023 14:12

Thanks for your response! I am worried about the judgement but it is what it is. I won’t tell them yet as I’m only 4 weeks.

Had to tell them around 6 weeks this time round as first trimester was dreadful and I was signed off with HG for 7-8 weeks!

QueSyrahSyrah · 15/12/2023 14:15

I told them at 13 weeks, purely because I had a few appointments booked and didn't want to take any more leave or make excuses for them when I didn't have to.

kiabella · 15/12/2023 20:08

I am 9 weeks today and told my manager last week. I work in the NHS on a mental health ward so needed to let them know as it's a risky environment. Also had to tell university as I'm doing my nursing degree alongside work and they've been really accommodating.

Pixiedust138 · 15/12/2023 20:52

I didn’t tell my work last pregnancy until i was 20 weeks, it was post covid and everyone was still working from home so I never saw anyone in person and it just never came up! I was also really nervous about telling them, I was 25 then and I didn’t get any comments luckily from work. I did have a midwife tell me I’m too young to have a baby though which was extremely weird…. 25 not 15 🤣 I’m pregnant again and I’ll be telling them around 12/14 weeks this time as I want to give as much notice as possible so that we can get in a good maternity cover

ActDottie · 15/12/2023 22:23

I wanted to wait until 12 weeks but I had awful morning sickness so ended up telling them (or my manager) at 7 weeks. He didn’t tell anyone else though but I think was relieved when I hit the 12 week mark and told others because he’d been making up excuses for me!

Maaofatoddler · 15/12/2023 23:11

I told my boss / HR when it's absolutely necessary to communicate I think around 26 weeks? I was pregnant during Covid so most of the friends/ colleagues didn't even know till the last month before my maternity leave.

I know this is an extremely late reply but was just googling when was best to tell work and stumbled across this thread. I can’t believe your midwife said that to you… I am also 26 and have to remind myself that I’m not a ‘teen mum’ even though I feel like it because people nowadays wait until their 30s! I’m also very worried about what to tell work… it’s a very corporate office and everyone is quite career focused. I know people won’t say anything but I know in their heads they’ll be thinking I’m so young :( … I’ll be 27 when the baby is born!

curliegirlie · 05/08/2025 10:27

I told my LM pretty much as soon as I found out, but only because I wanted her advice on whether to apply for another role (and she also knew about my miscarriage a few months previously). Otherwise I would probably have waited at least until some of my appointments started coming in.

2chocolateoranges · 05/08/2025 10:29

I told everyone after my 12 week scan.

Novanonplus · 05/08/2025 12:16

8 weeks to my boss (who I have a very good relationship with) because my morning sickness was horrific and I’d suffered several miscarriages so we sat down and talked through how to deal with work whilst I felt so rough and what I would want to do if I had another miscarriage which I appreciated massively.
my two friends who are my best friends work in the wider team so they obviously knew straight away.
my team and the wider team around 13 weeks.

lunar1 · 05/08/2025 12:17

4 weeks, I was a ward sister at the time and got HG before a positive test, so a little hard to hide.

BiddyPopthe2nd · 05/08/2025 20:49

I was married and early 30s, and in a job needing a lot of international travel. So I told my boss at 7 weeks ( 10 days after bfp) because he needed to know for a trip in was doing.

We told our parents at 12+5, when we saw them in person. I told the rest of my team a few weeks after that.

Namechange2567 · 07/08/2025 07:27

I was 3 weeks and 5 days when I told mine. I was 25 and in a professional career I did 6 years at uni for. Snuggling my 9 week old right now
