If you take/took aspirin…

…when did you start, and what dose, and who advised you (if anyone), and why did you take it, and for how long?

I had a MC at 6 weeks and another MMC at what should have been 12 weeks earlier this year. Have been TTC again for a few months and due to test today… I’ve got a feeling… But the aspirin thing is niggling me. I’ve not had any medical advice for (or against) it, but I don’t know why the MCs happened and this seems an easy thing to do in case it helps. But are there any risks? And how does it work?

Thank you!

Bumping as I'm interested!

Sorry to hear about your miscarriages OP. Sending love x

TheBirdintheCave · 15/12/2023 09:30

I had investigations for recurrent miscarriage at my IVF clinic after we had two MMCs but was told I wouldn't need aspirin as I didn't have any clotting disorders.

However (!) when I then got pregnant naturally with our miracle sticky baby I was told by the midwife at the booking in appointment that a consultant would put me on it anyway so I may as well start taking it.

I've been on it since 11 weeks and the dose is 150mg before bed.

Progesterone suppositories from 3dpo was the key for me I think, that and luck.

Pregnancy makes your blood more ‘sticky’, basically your platelets stick together and make clotting more easy for the body. This can cause issues if you already have a clotting issue, but even if you don’t due to this extra pregnancy clotting - tiny clots can form in the placenta and the uterus lining, stopping eggs embedding or embedding less securely so they don’t get the nutrients they need to develop, resulting in slow growth and eventually miscarriage.

The idea with taking aspirin is that it’s an antiplatelet so makes your blood less sticky, which increases blood flow to the placenta and reduces the risk of those tiny clots. After 3 miscarriages I was diagnosed with APS, which means my blood is sticky all the time. I take 150mg at night forever.

It’s important to take it at night (with food, so with your evening meal) because it’s more effective when taken at night.

One baby aspirin used to be the advised dose for most clotting issues and pregnancy related issues like low Papp-A, but it’s now more common for 2 baby aspirin to be seen as the optimum dose. Either way these are very small doses of aspirin (under 350mg a day is seen as low dose, compared to pain relief limit of 3600mg in 24 hours). It’s important not to take aspirin when breastfeeding though as it can cause something called Reye’s syndrome. Rare but a risk.

I hope this helps x

Fipfop · 15/12/2023 09:41

I took it from 12 weeks as I'd had preeclampsia in previous pregnancy and then had low Papp a. Took until 38 weeks I think

meepthebeep · 15/12/2023 09:47

Watching with interest as well. I’m planning to try aspirin next time too. Thank you for starting the thread, OP, and good luck with your test x

Ingridika · 15/12/2023 09:59

I had two miscarriages this year, both missed and both at 9 weeks. Got pregnant again in October and am taking aspirin from the first day of positive test. I am now 10+4 and my latest scan was yesterday and the baby did stick around this time for longer! He is well and growing how he should. I am not out of danger zone as of yet, but hoping this time lucky. Is it aspirin or not, cannot say… but it does not hurt to try!

Redruby2020 · 15/12/2023 10:10

Hi, sorry i can't remember the dose but it was over the counter from Boots I think it could have been 75mg possibly, thinking that because it was in a little tub and the tablets were small.
I can't remember the exact stage I started taking it at, but it was the consultant I think, who told me to start them, I did think the midwife initially, but then I was thinking would they do that?

Whataretheodds · 15/12/2023 10:14

2 MCs 9w and 11w ,(both observed SCH), 3rd pregnancy no aspirin prescribed until 13 weeks (after NT/ dating scan) as is pretty common for over 40s to prevent pre-eclampsia. I will be stopping by 36 weeks.

I asked specifically about aspirin at my booking appointment (midwife checked with consultant) and was told wouldn't help, might harm at that stage.

I was prescribed progesterone (had also been in 2nd pregnancy after bleed). Sympathetic GP prescribed from positive test in 3rd pregnancy.

Now 33w with no haematoma in this pregnancy, and no other issues.

Pigsinblankets13 · 15/12/2023 10:26

Hello, sorry to read about your MCs. It's so shit. I just wanted to share my story with you in the hope that it gives you some hope...

I had 2 MC's last year, one was a MMC. When I fell pregnant again, I started taking 75mg of aspirin daily from when I found out I was pregnant until i was 36 weeks. My GP didn't support this but I did my own research. One midwife said to me anecdotally she had seen quite a few mums who had decided to take aspirin and had healthy pregnancies. I had a healthy pregnancy and had my little girl in July.

I won't really know if it was the aspirin that made that pregnancy successful, but I definitely will be taking it again when and if I am lucky to have another baby. It doesn't do any harm, so personally think it's worth a try.

Sending love x

I started taking baby aspirin 75mg on my 4th IVF cycle, I had no medical advice on this and took it off my own back. I did have additional testing which showed I had no clotting issues. That cycle was successful. I've no idea if this was the reason or not.
At my first midwife appointment (approx. 8 weeks) she asked was I taking aspirin, I explained the dosage and she advised to continue. At my 12 week scan I was told to up the dosage to 150mg purely due to my BMI and continue with this throughout the rest of the pregnancy.

babythreeincoming · 15/12/2023 10:49

I've been taking it since 12 weeks and 150mg. Prescribed by my midwife for high blood pressure in previous two pregnancies x

Oxalis00 · 15/12/2023 12:11

So interesting, thank you everyone. Really appreciate the kind words about my MCs too - and so sorry to all those who have experienced similar.

So, I’ve started bleeding … but PT was positive. Waiting for a call back from GP…

I had an MMC in may at what should've been 12 weeks, all previous pregnancies were fine, although my toddler did have a growth issue... So when I started trying again I started taking 75mg aspirin straightaway, I got pregnant again in August and I'm now 20 weeks, I upped my aspirin to 150mg a day on advice from my midwife and GP. All is great at this point 🤞 I do bruise very easily and have nose bleeds (small) every day but it's well worth it for a healthy pregnancy.

Namechange10003 · 15/12/2023 14:26

I've had two miscarriages so wanted to try anything. I took the small dose, baby aspirin as they call it as soon as I found out I was pregnant again every day.

I wasn't told to take it but did mention it to my midwife who said it was up to me.

I stopped taking it the day I was induced.

meepthebeep · 15/12/2023 14:39

It’s really encouraging to read all of these accounts of aspirin working after MCs and MMCs. It sounds as though starting on 75mg nightly from the first positive test would be OK?

I’m so sorry for everyone’s losses 💐 but really glad you found that aspirin worked for you afterwards (or at least it didn’t hurt, even if it’s not exactly clear what helped 🙂)

Pickles2023 · 15/12/2023 15:43

Im prescribed it. Told to take it straight from 12 week scan till 36 weeks.

Had preeclampsia last time and recurrent miscarriages x

Oxalis00 · 18/12/2023 19:15

Thanks everyone for thoughts. I’m on progesterone now and no more bleeding (it actually slowed to spotting before starting the pessaries) so am wondering whether to add aspirin too now. @Whataretheodds do you know why they said it might harm at an early stage? Seems lots of people do take it from BFP or even 3DPO…

OP posts:
Whataretheodds · 18/12/2023 19:17

Because it thins the blood which wasn't what was wanted.

CR7 · 18/12/2023 20:26

12-36 weeks. 150 mg every evening x

PurpleOrchid42 · 18/12/2023 22:20

I called my gp after 2 MC, and that was her advice. She said to take 75mg of baby aspirin a day, from the positive test. It seemed to work! ❤️

Lavender14 · 18/12/2023 22:23

I'd be inclined to sit with your gp and talk it through op, hopefully they can give you reassurance and some guidance on dose etc.

I didn't start until I was 12 weeks and the midwife suggested I'd be at higher risk for pre-eclampsia and then I took it right up to 38 weeks.

Wishing you all the best with your journey.

veeolay · 18/12/2023 22:23

From 12 weeks to delivery, 150mg a day. Midwife initially wasn't sure on the dose the advise but my GP said it had recently changed from 75mg to 150mg daily. I took it for high BP in a previous pregnancy

Torganer · 18/12/2023 22:26

I’ve had 4 miscarriages and have been told to take as soon as I get a positive test. Also heparin and progesterone. Always only when I get a positive test though.

JRTfan · 18/12/2023 23:01

I am on aspirin 2 x 75mg soluble tablets per day started at 12 weeks. It's an IVF pregnancy and I'm 40, cant remember which of these triggered the need for it maybe both, but I believe its because of increased risk of pre eclampsia.
