Mums who had sphincter weakness after 3rd/4th degree tears

Hi All,

My LO has just turned 4 months old. I unfortunately suffered a 3b tear after a forceps delivery. I did have a problem with controlling wind but that has improved greatly as time has gone on but I still get days where I only have 5 minutes before i need a bowel movement! I don’t get much of a build up either. I’ve recently been told I have sphincter muscle weakness on one side. Is this something anyone else has dealt with before and did the muscle strength improve with time and pelvic floor exercises?

I had this and had less than 1 minute warning when my first child was only a few weeks old, which was dreadful. After a few weeks/months most of my symptoms disappeared though.

I had a prolapse repair about 5 years ago and the surgeon checked the rear entrance too and said I needed surgery to repair the sphincter. But it doesn’t really cause me any problems, 18 years since the injury, and the surgery is supposed to be painful so I haven’t bothered.

Get referred to a specialist physio. You can have nerve damage, and just general abdominal trauma. Will take time to repair.

@TheProvincialLady

Did you also have a 3rd degree tear?

Awh it’s so horrible having to run to the toilet all the time isn’t it. I’m glad to hear you recovered well though and it did get better.
I’m so worried about when I have to return to work as I can’t be running to the toilet, it’s so embarrassing especially when your in your early 30’s I didn’t expect to be left with toilet issues after having a baby.
Yes I’ve heard it’s really painful and can imagine because I couldn’t walk after my repair after birth. Apparently a secondary repair is also likely to fail so if it’s not causing you any bother you’ve done the right thing leaving it alone x

@Jandob

Hi, I’m currently under physio ☺️ and I do think I’ve got some nerve damage as I get burning sessions down there

Hello!

Ive just added a similar post to yours and was wondering how you got on and what treatment did you have to have if any. I’m 19 months pp and I’ve still suffering. I’ve been told surgery or an implant is my likely route but hoping to hear if physio has helped someone to prevent this.
