Found out a couple day ago after my period not arriving so very early days - do I need to stop drinking coffee immediately? I’ve had a coffee every morning since finding out because i completely forgot that caffeine is a thing to be mindful of in pregnancy.

thanks in advance! x

@NoCloudsAllowed

Absolutely agree with this: "So many of the rules placed on pregnant women are based on scant evidence and the precautionary principle."

I can see that there's a nice sort of ritual about changing things when you're pregnant (so some people might like to do things that aren't strictly necessarily like, I dunno, switch to herbal tea), but I also think people end up depriving themselves unnecessarily because they haven't been given the full info!

Coffee used to stop me vomiting when pregnant

spriots · 13/12/2023 16:21

No because there isn't any need to stop drinking coffee.

I did cut back a bit - I like the taste of strong coffee so I did this by mixing decaf ground coffee with normal.

SavBlancTonight · 13/12/2023 16:21

No. I only have 1 cup a day and didn't stop.

I also carried on with tea - probably 2 cups a day in those days.

Having said that, I went off coffee completely from about week 9-week 13 with both pregnancies. I only found out I was pregnant with dc2 at 8.5 weeks. Dh and I laughed as I went off coffee about 10 days later - we figure if I hadn't taken the test when I did, my coffee aversion would DEFINITELY have woken us up to the fact that I was pregnant!!!

dullandgrey · 13/12/2023 16:22

First pregnancy I went off it so it was quite easy to avoid. Second was put off just first trimester but have been having one cup a day on average since. I've really not made many changes this second time round.

alrighthen · 13/12/2023 16:25

I’m having about two strong cups a day plus one cup of tea which is above the NHS guidelines. I found Oster’s chapter on caffeine very informative and feel comfortable with my decision.

Waitingfordoggo · 13/12/2023 16:26

I don’t like coffee but I continued to drink (plenty of) tea during my pregnancies. That was quite a while ago and I don’t recall being warned about caffeine at the time. The kids are mid-late teens now and are both fine and healthy.

Sequinne · 13/12/2023 16:27

Congratulations op!

Don’t worry about the caffeine you’ve already had. Baby will be fine at this stage.

I think the guidelines say can safely have 200mg a day but I just switched to decaf. It’s much easier than worrying about how much caffeine you are costuming.

MumDaisy1980 · 13/12/2023 16:32

No. I have no coffee, tea & milk & dark chocolate. Only have white chocolate. It's personal choice. Indeed you could have minimal amount of caffeine as other posters and NHS indicated.

No craving at all and possible because the hormone changed. When I tired, just go take a nap or my mind just simply switched off if at work ha.

Inmydreams88 · 13/12/2023 16:35

I drank a latte every morning as usual until around 8 weeks when my morning sickness started. I went completely off all coffee, tea, food, even water was a struggle to drink. Around 18/19 weeks when I started to feel better I didn't start drinking coffee again as I thought I'd gone this long without it I might as well keep going. I'm 37 weeks now...I can't wait to have my first latte after giving birth.

LindorDoubleChoc · 13/12/2023 16:38

No, it wasn't in the ever-growing list of interference guidelines when I was pg, not that long ago.

MammaTo · 13/12/2023 16:41

I just limited myself to 1 cup of coffee a day or 2 cups of tea. But in the beginning anything with milk was making me feel queasy so it was more lemon an ginger to try and help.
Congratulations!!

RoseMarigoldViolet · 13/12/2023 16:56

Yes, I actually stopped when I started trying to get pregnant. I thought that a healthy body might help with conceiving as I was not so young!

ReginaPhalange12 · 13/12/2023 17:02

At first I went off tea & coffee but when I eventually liked it again I switched to decaf.
Congratulations 😊

Nandocushion · 13/12/2023 17:04

The only thing I gave up was booze

HeraSyndulla · 13/12/2023 17:07

I did with the first coz I was puking for England. The other two I drank treble espresso’s at 6 am.

Doyathinkhesaurus · 13/12/2023 17:11

No - because life is shit enough without taking away tea and coffee because of an infinitesimally small risk of something bad happening.

Millions of women have drunk more than one cup of coffee a day in pregnancy and had perfect pregnancies and healthy babies.

Nottodaty · 13/12/2023 17:16

It’s how I knew I might be pregnant - nausea with the smell. Pre- pregnancy loved coffee, pregnant smelt awful couldn’t stand the stuff.

Once born I was Breast feeding and moved to decaf for a year.

MixedCouple · 13/12/2023 17:22

Nope. Just reduced to once or twice a week and had a cup of tea a day.
It is safe and fine to have the reccomended caffeine.

Nope, I have one or two nespressos a day. I'm cutting down simply because the caffeine is triggering some anxiety lately, but I'll still have a cup of tea or two instead.

restingrichface · 13/12/2023 18:16

Nope, I have had two coffees or a coffee and a Diet Coke every day during all my pregnancies, including this one. I also don't count chocolate.

The NHS guidelines are based on extremely safe numbers. Going a little over once in a while won't hurt.

Lavender14 · 13/12/2023 18:19

You can have up to I think 200mg a day but that will also include chocolate or cola or tea etc. I switched to decaf pretty quickly but if I didn't have a decaf option available I'd not have minded taking a cup. I just wouldn't have had more than one. At the same time I found switching to decaf massively improved my sleep and how I felt in the mornings so ds is now 1 and I've never gone back from decaf.

Katherina02837 · 13/12/2023 18:21

Yes, completely! But not because I wanted to! I couldn't handle the taste or even the smell of it in my pregnancies.
Slowly managed to go back to it after birth, and had a weak cup in the morning and afternoon while breastfeeding.

Passingthethyme · 13/12/2023 18:21

Decaffeinated, was horrible at first but you get used to it

OopsieeDaisy · 13/12/2023 23:23

No - not in my first pregnancy and not in this one. I’m just more mindful and will limit how much I have. If I have an instant coffee first thing, I may have another later in the day if I’m tired at work or whatever. If I know I’m going out for coffee and it will be stronger, I’ll skip the morning instant and just have the posh one.
