Vanishing twin - fetal medicine

Hello there, I went for my 12 week scan today and discovered my second baby had vanished, just the sac remains.
They told me because it is still classed as a twin pregnancy they wouldn't be able to take the babies NT measurements and I would need to be referred to fetal medicine. I also cant have the screening bloods because the vanished twin's DNA may be in my blood.
Has this happened to anyone else and did you also get referred to fetal medicine?

Never heard of this. had a vanishing twin discovered at 11 weeks though likely lost around week 8 but it was still there...just heart beat had stopped and stopped growing, it was more than just a sack. I had my NIPT test including sex that day. if there's only a sac remaining there's not going to be much DNA there if any as it likely didn't progress much beyond six weeks. And it tests for certain chromosones so if it comes back low the likehood is both babies were negative and if high chance then you can investigate further.

When did you last have a scan? sorry to ask but did they give you an indication of when the twin "vanished"

Hello, thanks for your reply. They didn’t tell me but the sac measurements on my scan report suggest it was 8 weeks. I am going back today for the nuchal measurements on the surviving baby.
The last scan where I seen them both was 10th Nov. It has completely vanished, just an empty sac and they could see a 4cm bleed.

Yes I was advised this when I was pregnant with my twins that the NIPT couldn't be done accurately or the other blood tests. No reason why they couldn't do the NT measurement though but they use this together with the blood test results to determine the risk factors so maybe that's why they wouldn't do it because taken on it's own it won't mean much x

Yes. This is exactly what happened to me at my 12 week scan. Couldnt have the tests till about 2 weeks later. The twin had been around 6 weeks. Just want to reassure you that the surviving twin was fine and I had a normal pregnancy. She's 3 now!

@thelonemommabear They are taking the NT measurements but they said they will have to be taken by fetal medicine rather than the regular sonographer.

@Mum78920 thank you! That is very reassuring! 🩷
