How to help pregnancy nausea?

First time being pregnant and I am struggling with the nausea. There is literally nothing that taste normal. Everything taste weird and bitter and I'm also always, 24/7, feeling too sick to eat anything even if I'm hungry. Im not sure what I can do to help? Is there anything I can take or any foods that don't make you feel so nauseous? Would really appreciate any advice

not foody foods for me. So fizzy drinks with fake flavours. Cucumber, crisps. Light foods you can eat quickly so it’s not like eating - satsumas, cheerios (the breakfast cereal- little and wash down quickly) cracker biscuits, dried apricots, sorbet but not strong flavours like mango is what I found. Nothing hot, nothing strong flavoured unless it’s a fake flavour. Muesli bars? As long as you eat sometimes you will get through. Try for a mouthful or two every hour and see how you go.

if you are losing weight due to nausea you can ask the gp for medication, you don’t have to be throwing up all the time to qualify for it.

Ginger is good for pregnancy sickness. DH used to bring me a cup of tea and 3 ginger biscuits before I got up in the morning. Also I drank a bit of dried ginger if I felt queasy during the day.

I am craving salty foods and felt the same in my previous pregnancy. Ready salted crisps are just heaven right now. Also, eating little and often was helpful for me.
I ended up with severe sickness, so I had medication, but I know people who used medication for nausea too. It can be debilitating!
Hope the worst of this passes soon.

Loads of ginger tea.
Anti sickness bands
Plain foods, for example, I lived off chips. Anything else I would vomit back up within 5 mins.
Avoid heavily seasoned or strong scented food, for example, garlic and onion used to make my nausea much worse.
Loads of water.

Try not to worry about not being able to keep food down. I started to feel really guilty but was reassured that baby will take necessary nutrients from my own body even if I’m unable to eat

When you are thinking about what to eat, try thinking in categories rather than about actual foods (I found the thinking started up the nausea). So cold or hot, crunchy or smooth, wet or dry. And then grab something from the category.

I also tried to minimise eating things that smelled strongly and focus on stuff that cooked fast. So a scrambled egg on toast, microwave rice with cheese, hummus and carrots

try little and often, ginger tea, ice water, rosemary salted cheese biscuits, prescription nausea drugs if you cant find anything else to work

Carbs are best to minimise nausea.

Eat little and often rather than normal size meals. 6 small meals or 12 tiny snacks meals are better than trying to continue 3 large meals per day.

Don't allow yourself to get excessively hungry as that makes nausea worse.

Nothing helped me, apart from medication! Don't be afraid to see your GP

Anti sickness bands really do work!

I was very sceptical, but they do work!

Macaroni46 · 12/12/2023 12:42

The only thing I could keep down during the early stages of my pregnancies was porridge. Can't stand the stuff now!

I'm in a similar situation, I spoke to my GP yesterday who prescribed anti sickness tablets. They take the edge off my sickness so far but she said I can only take them for 2 weeks and then have to change to another med.

I agree with what others have said, also mint helps me a bit. It's awful and debilitating; I hope yours eases @flyingbeet

Oatmilktea · 12/12/2023 17:21

@IVFgothope do you mind me asking the name of what you were prescribed? My GP prescribed me anti sickness meds today and didn’t mention taking them for a limited time and I’m worried about taking them as it is. Thanks

I found that if I started with carbs I could then manage some veg and protein.

Sachets of microwave rice
Egg noodles with soy sauce
Crackers
Popcorn (homemade if poss)
Grissini breadsticks
Pretzel
Sparkling water, ginger ale, tonic water
Ginger cordial was a godsend
Ice
Toast
Carrot sticks
Strips of peppers

IVFgothope · 12/12/2023 18:38

@Oatmilktea I have prochlorperazine. She said that this is what she first prescribes to patients but a rare side effect after 2 weeks was something related to me having weird movements (nothing related to the baby). She also shared this website which outlines the safety data for different medicines used for sickness https://www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk/

Salt and vinegar chipsticks and kiwis were the only things I could stomach weeks 6-16. Good luck!
