Evening Nausea - First Trimester

I'm currently 8 weeks pregnant and was initially optimistic about avoiding any morning sickness, as I felt perfectly fine until week 7. However, I've been experiencing evening nausea, fortunately without actual vomiting. The sensation kicks in around 8pm, making my evenings a bit challenging. My sense of smell has become incredibly sensitive; even opening the fridge can trigger a strong aversion. Certain foods I used to enjoy now make me feel sick, which is quite unusual. Surprisingly, I've lost the taste for English tea (decaf during pregnancy) a drink I usually love.
While I know nausea is common in the first trimester, I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions for non-medication remedies or tips to alleviate these symptoms?

I used to get terrible nausea in the evenings, some things I could helpful were to avoid big meals at dinner, I started having my main meals at lunch instead. I also avoided screens as found it made my sickness worse and I used to suck on sweets when I was trying to go to sleep. To be honest though I was normally in bed trying to go to sleep by 8pm but that’s ok for me as I don’t have other DCs! On the plus side I felt my worse around 8 or 9 weeks, it was improving by 12 weeks and gone around 14 weeks!

I've been relying on mints or sweets at work to manage any midday nausea, and occasionally chewing gum since no one is aware of my pregnancy. Hoping these symptoms start to subside in the next few weeks, as it's been quite overwhelming, and I don't feel quite like myself.

I was the same with tea, caffeine or not, when normally was my go to. This lasted throughout pregnancy. I also was never actually sick but lots of aversions to smells and tastes. From memory it didn’t improve right at 12 weeks like I was hoping but more like 15/16. For me eating often helped my nausea, bland and plain things.

As long as there's a light at the end of the tunnel, I'm willing to push through. I'm making an effort to eat frequently but in smaller portions. However, I'm cautious about putting on too much weight early in my pregnancy. Consistently snacking seems to help ease the nausea too for me and serves as a helpful distraction.

It might not work for everyone but I found that ice lollies (Calippos!) helped with evening nausea. The other thing that helped me was satsumas.

Thank you for your recommendation, I really appreciate it. I already am regularly eating satsumas in my diet as the refreshing taste helps, especially when kept in the fridge. I'll give lollies a try—planning to grab some tomorrow because I'm pretty desperate to explore anything that doesn't involve medication.

Honestly OP I found weeks 8 - 10 the hardest of the first trimester, there’s definitely light at the end of the tunnel. Try and get as much rest as possible as I think being tired makes the nausea so much worse.

Just wanted to say thank you so much for the calippo lolly recommendation, they have been a god send to my nausea - I could eat them all day!

Eat what you fancy, when you can. If this is your first child, embrace not doing anything, eating the same meals over and over, etc. I found travel sickness wrist bands alleviated it slightly for a while.

Hopefully this will fade for you soon - I felt like I was hungover constantly for weeks - but do be prepared to not feel like yourself and for the symptoms/physical effects of pregnancy to be overwhelming at times, especially as you get to the third trimester. Treat yourself with kindness, it can be hard! Wishing you all the best with your pregnancy.

I’m with you on this OP! I’m currently 7+2 and my nausea from around 5pm is awful, however I find I need to eat to get rid of the nausea so we are having our tea a bit earlier than normal! I’m also finding oranges good like another poster said as well as fruit juice! Good luck and hopefully the nausea goes soon! Xx

MixedCouple · 11/12/2023 21:20

You are lucky first of all.
I am 8 weeks and have had all day and night nausea since 6 weeks. I have tried Ginger and Almonds which take the edge off slightly. But that is about it.
I just complain 24/7 " I feel sick ughhhhhh".

It never lasted this long with my LO I only had nausea for 2/3 weeks and only started late afternoons but was gone by the evening. So this time it has hit me hard.!!!!! All day 24/7.

I lived on the Jacobs high fibre cream crackers. The saltiness for some reason really helped, also bought ginger sweets and used the travel sickness bands

Jellycats4life · 11/12/2023 21:52

I remember it well. I couldn’t stand the idea of a cup of tea - any hot drink actually. In fact I didn’t want to drink at all because I felt so nauseous.

Bland carbs helped a little. But mostly it was something that only got better once out of the first trimester.

I'm hoping that it starts to ease up before week 12, as many suggest. Satsumas have been a lifesaver, and I've been practically living with Ritz crackers strapped to me! Fruit juices are a saviour for taking vitamins since the smell and taste of iron makes me quite nauseous. Wishing you a speedy recovery and best of luck during your pregnancy! xx

I'm sorry to hear that you're consistently dealing with sickness, it takes over your day and can be overwhelming when loved ones can't fully understand how you're feeling. Wishing that your sickness starts to subside over the next few weeks, and try to rest up as much as possible. Personally, satsumas have been a great relief for my sickness, along with Ritz crackers, and the strategy of never letting myself feel hungry—eating small but often to avoid triggers. Best of luck! xx
