How to stop vaping

I’m at the end of my first trimester - and ashamed to say I’ve not been able to kick the vaping habit
I’m worried sick about what damage it has done already, and how I can go about stopping.
I was a smoker before my previous pregnancies and although it was hard I was able to stop as you just can’t be a pregnant smoker - but vaping is a different story. It’s so easy to do in secret, behind closed doors. It’s constantly accessible and I’m struggling so much.
totally ok with getting mum shaming comments on this, because I know it’s disgusting and totally wrong to be doing, but I’m wondering if anyone has been in the same position and has any words of wisdom to help 😥

I had to give up nicotine for surgery this year, I went from vaping 2% to using the zero nicotine vapes. Took about 3 days to not miss the nicotine. This may be an option for you?

I recently quit the zero nicotine vapes and found the lack of habit was as bad as the lack of nicotine >.< but glad I did it in parts.

Good luck x

Senso21 · 08/12/2023 17:03

Thanks @BusyCaz can I ask which vape you used that was zero nicotine?

you’re right I think it’s the habit of always having it to hand, rather than the nictotime itself.

absolutely terrified the baby’s brain will be damaged already

Just bin it and don't let yourself buy another one. Seriously, you're the grown up, you hold the purse strings, just stop funding this habit (which is hopefully exactly the same thing you would do if you found out your child was vaping one day). I kicked smoking by just not letting myself buy another packet.

I quit vaping by 10 weeks. Was it hard? Absolutely. I used the Nicolette Inhalator for 6 weeks and egged every cartridge out for a whole 24 hour period.

After a few weeks I was sucking on the inhalator but there was an old cartridge in there with no nicotine left just for 'support'.

I've been entirely free from nicotine now for 8 weeks. I think about vaping a few times a day. I think how lovely a Lost Mary, rare steak and cheeseboard would be after I give birth etc but it's not worth kicking that addiction back in when my brain is still very much addicted.

You can do this. It's so so hard and I have no idea how nicotine is legal with it being this hard to kick but you can do this. This is coming from a HEAVY vaper who would go through a Lost Mary in about 6-8 hours.

I quit vaping by switching to 0% nicotine same as PP. I vaped that for a week or so then realised one evening I hadn’t picked up the vape all day. I put it in the garage and I’ve never vaped since.

I don’t miss it at all, I love the freedom.

BusyCaz · 08/12/2023 17:13

I used the elf bars and aroma king zero nicotine.

Your in the wrong place not to get bollockings from everyone 😉

I smoked before both my babies, but somehow have insane self control. The second I get a positive test I never smoke again. I didn't start back after my son until he was about 14 months old too!

For me i think about the way I'd feel it I miscarried and I have miscarried before so I know how much it mentally kills you. And how I'd never ever forgive myself. I imagine smoking into a tiny babies little face and them breathing in all the harmful chemicals... I could never. So why do it when they're inside you trying to even develop these little features and tiny organs? I torture myself but it works instantly every time. To the point I don't even know why I ever went back to smoking, I clearly don't need it! Will see what happens when this bubs is born, I'm 22 weeks and haven't smoked since I found out x

Senso21 · 08/12/2023 18:09

Thanks all, I appreciate the advice, and the bollockings, I need to sort myself out and it’s good to hear how selfish I am being!

vaping is definitely a bigger addiction for me than cigarettes are, it’s scary how one addiction can be replaced with something more addictive and even more accessible

If you continue to struggle, get yourself a copy of Allen Carrs easy way to stop vaping.

I quit vaping over a month ago with it, it's super easy, and you won't go through any will power.

I'm not going to berate you either, I'd quit smoking for 6 years before I had my kids but then after a chance cigarette at a party (kids party no less!!) when my youngest was 6 months, I was back on 20 a day within about 2 weeks.

Allen Carr helped when I quit both smoking and vaping, so I highly recommend both. And definitely move onto 0% nicotine which will help.

Good luck!

I felt this in my soul.

Vaping was a worse addiction for me than to actual cigarettes. I was like a train all day on the vape. I'm so thankful I'm free of that now.

Starryeyes34 · 08/12/2023 18:52

I know what you mean with being addicted, I am just over 7 weeks now and knew I had to stop as soon as I found out. I literally never put my vape down and was really worried how I would give up. I was smoking 12mg so straight away I ordered 6, 3 and 0mg. I literally filled up with the 6 smoked that a few days, went on to the 3 did the same and then on to the 0. The 0 now makes me feel sick anyway and so haven't bothered to vape and don't need to now, I would suggest weening off it that way to be honest. : )

Same here except I never started again. It's been 16 years now but having a healthy family and staying healthy for them was always the priority.

It causes so much damage.

Senso21 · 08/12/2023 19:40

@Strokethefurrywall amazing I didn’t realise there was a vape version too. I actually stopped smoking a few weeks after finding out I was pregnant with my first by listening to his stop smoking book and it really worked. Going to get this on my kindle now.

and I’m going to move to a zero nicotine elf bar tomorrow for the weekend and hopefully I don’t see the need for that and stop all together next week

BusyCaz · 08/12/2023 19:43

Going zero nicotine will be an amazing first step, best of luck Flowers

Senso21 · 08/12/2023 19:48

Well done to you, wish I’d sorted this sooner. Congratulations xx

I was exactly the same as you. Major vape addict. Desperately wanted to stop when I got pregnant but couldn't (or so I thought).

I quit cold turkey about 4 weeks ago now when I was 7 weeks preg. The first couple of days were tough but nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be. I've definitely been eating a lot more since quitting.

You can 100% do it. 💪🏼 Good luck.

You need the support to actually stop because you've essentially replaced one addiction with another.

Does your GP have smoking services?

Or are they outsourced to another company?

Either way, asking for a referral or help to stop is going to be your best bet.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 10/12/2023 15:23

Have you told your midwife? Most places have the services to help you quit. Best of luck!
