Positive pregnancy test 4-5 weeks after DTD

Hi,

Wondering if anyone can provide some insight into what might be going on here?

I have a 9 month old DD. She was conceived immediately after a missed miscarriage last year.

I just got my period back 2 weeks ago and we had DTD around 2 weeks before this. I had been testing up until my period and all the tests were negative, then when my period came (completely normal btw), I stopped testing.

Cue today, when I get home and see I am spotting which I thought was very odd. In both pregnancies I spotted at 6-7 weeks pregnant so, I took a test. It is a faint positive. Not a squinter, very obvious line, but light nonetheless.

False positive? Chemical pregnancy? Possibly another miscarriage? I understand no one will have the answers for me and I will indeed go to the doctors after speaking with my husband. But, yeah if anyone has had a similar experience or some insight they could share that would be amazing.

Thank you x

Why aren't you assuming the most obvious answer is that you're pregnant?

ChildOfTheMoon · 07/12/2023 13:43

If you dtd 2 weeks before period that's generally when the majority of women ovulate .
Obviously your pregnant if your hcg is high enough to set off a pregnancy test

Arosebyanyname · 07/12/2023 13:45

Surprised it's a weak positive if your dates are right, it would usually be quite strong at that poinr. But if it came up in the time and has colour then it is very unlikely to be a false positive. So either you are pregnant or were pregnant and your hormone levels are still raised. Can you retest with a pink dye test?

Apologies @Bobtheamazinggingerdog @ChildOfTheMoon - I suppose I look a bit dim from how I’ve worded it.

I guess I believe the test but thinking something isn’t right and wondered if someone could share anything. I’ve called 111 and have an appointment in the next couple of hours so imagine I will have some next steps shortly.

The light test it was threw me @Arosebyanyname and the fact that I’ve just had my period. I think you might be right - maybe I was pregnant and my hcg could be dropping hence why it’s light. Picture for reference.

That's a positive. I would say you are pregnant.

Bobtheamazinggingerdog · 07/12/2023 14:31

Honestly - if you did conceive and it didn't stick around you will just have a period, you don't need medical advice. This happened to me once. And if you are pregnant you don't need medical input until later on. Try not to worry and test again in a few days.

Read about the hook effect, apparently that can cause a fainter positive around 6ish weeks of pregnancy?

Arosebyanyname · 07/12/2023 14:49

As someone else mentioned it could be the hook effect - if you collect some wee do one test with it as normal, then dilute the wee with normal water and do another test. If it's the hook effect the second test will be darker. If the second is lighter then there's just not much hormone present. This was mine at about eight weeks.

Although if it was a "full" period lasting several days I'd be leaning towards a chemical pregnancy I suppose. I hope you're ok either way x

RedElleJ · 09/12/2023 14:05

Thanks everyone :)

Yeah I do know of the hook effect. I just haven’t tried to dilute it yet…not sure I will tbh as I’m fairly certain something isn’t right @Arosebyanyname@Nejnej

I’ve got an appointment with EPU Monday morning to see what is going on.

My tests aren’t getting any darker and the first one wasn’t even FMU so it’s not really indicating a healthy pregnancy I would say. (I know line progression isn’t meant to mean anything but anecdotally it seems to be an indicator in a lot of cases).

Will keep the thread updated once I have some answers.

Thank you x

Oh I was wondering how you were getting on. Doesn't sound great but fingers crossed x

RedElleJ · 09/12/2023 14:49

Thank you @Arosebyanyname

I’m not hopeful but I think I will be okay :) I just feel bad for my DD. She is only 9 months and I feel a bit careless for not really thinking about how, if things go wrong, it would impact her.

I ended up in an ectopic rabbit hole the other day and just had this overwhelming guilt wash over me if I had to be separated from her for any period of time.

My husband already has to take her on Monday as she can’t come with me (obviously). She is breastfed if you can’t tell by my clingyness to her haha!

I was prescribed progesterone to support my pregnancy with her and I still bled throughout the first trimester. I shouldn’t have been so blasé about not not trying, knowing our history.

But anyway hopefully, even if it isn’t a viable pregnancy, there will be nothing sinister to address x

I had the same when I had my second - what if it went wrong and he didn't have a mum etc.. But I think that fear is programmed into us. FWIW I had an argument with the receptionist at my consultant appointment for my second pregnancy. I had my 15 month old with me in the sling, and she made a song and dance about it. I asked if antenatal care was only available to those privileged enough to have childcare. She piped down then 😂

RedElleJ · 11/12/2023 11:56

That’s a good point @Arosebyanyname I’ll be sure to have that ready for future appointments!

Update: no sign of pregnancy in womb or tubes. Bloods have been taken and need to wait for a phone call to see what my HCG is and what the next steps are.

So right now it is a pregnancy of unknown location. Which I am hoping will resolve naturally 🤞🏻
