Those of you diabetic and then got pregnant (as oppose to developing gestational diabeties) did you have any earlier appts than the 10 week booking appt with a regular midwife and the 12 week scan.

My diabetic team seemed to think I should get an appt at 7 weeks. Help please

I'm only 5 weeks and my sugars are already jumping from fasting level of 5 to 9. I'm gonna ring my diabetic team tomorrow but shouldn't there be more antenatal care.

Hi congratulations! With both of my pregnancies I had an early scan around 6 or 7 weeks and a booking appointment as soon as they could fit me in. I can't remember exactly but I think it was before 10 weeks. Do push for an appointment as soon as possible. You need to start on insulin ASAP to control your blood sugars.

Hi! I’m currently 5 weeks 5 days with type 1 diabetes. Had bloods at 4 weeks and an appointment with the MDT (diabetes nurse & consultant, diabetes specialist midwife and consultant obstetrician) at 4 weeks 5 days. This was organised by my preconception diabetes team, whom Iv been under for a year. I have an early scan booked in for next week (6weeks 5 days) but this was organised by the early pregnancy unit, as I had a missed miscarriage in July. Last time I was pregnant I did get a viability scan at 8 weeks, which was when I found out about the MMC and I believe this is standard for type one diabetics/pre existing diabetes. I haven’t yet been allocated a community midwife, but this is a long story due to a breach of confidentially concerning my miscarriage and I have requested to be seen by another team a short drive away from me (same hospital trust). I chased this up today and waiting to hear back. Have your diabetes team organised anything like this? Are you able to find out what services your local area provide? It doesn’t seem right to wait until 8 weeks for bloods etc. I was also seen by a dietician at 5 weeks the first time I was pregnant.

I have LADA. I was seen around 6 weeks with all of my babies at the diabetic pregnancy clinic. I go every fortnight from that point. Every fortnight I get bloods, blood pressure and urine checked and I see a diabetic consultant. I see the ob regularly at clinic as well but not every 2 weeks. I usually get scans around 6, 12, 20, 24, 28, 32 and 36 weeks.

I'm type one and I've seen the diabetes midwives and diabetes nurse within a week of finding out I was pregnant both times. As others said I was also given a viability scan at 8 weeks.

Throughout pregnancy I had calls with the diabetes team (usually a consultant but sometimes a nurse) every 2-4 weeks depending on how my control had been. And saw the midwife every 4 weeks for general check ups but also to check HbA1C. Also spoke to an obstetrician after every scan. In the third trimester I had growth scans every 4 weeks.

Thanks all. I am going to chase up my maternity team as what you have said was in line with what my diabetic team said
