Protein in wee at 40 weeks, how worried should I be?

Have been for a check up today, blood pressure was higher than usual (was 135/88, usually around 100/60) but hospital was very hot and I was left waiting ages.

Have just been and looked through my notes and they have
put a + under the protein in urine space. Has always been NAD (nothing detected) before.

No one mentioned this when I was there, should I be worried about it or is this classed as normal?

you should worry when it is protein ++++ and swelling and a high BP.

if you had been waiting a long time and it was hot, then your BP might have been raised due to taht.. did they take your BP again at the end of your appt?

of course , call for reassurance if you need to. that is what the MW is there for.

no headaches or swelling or visual disturbances?

Ok, so just one + is nothing to worry about then?

No swelling at all, I do feel exhausted though and have a slight headache but that could be due to feeling so tired. They didn't take BP again but I was feeling pretty stressed just being there so that could explain that.

you could always call them tomorrow, ask them to recheck your BP or just get some reassurance.. try to rest and take it easy, make sure you are hydrated and keep your feet up !

I got a + after I put my sample pot in the dishwasher (the tablets contain something which has protein in oops!)

But then I did get the four ++++ and had preeclampsia as well, one + is nothing to worry about.

I had a bit of protein in my urine at my final MW appointment before DS2, and went into labour about 24 hrs later. My DP (he's a biochemist) said that the protein can be a sign of impending labour.

I am not, repeat not, a scientist so am prepared to be completely and utterly wrong on this!

I had protein in urine every week from about 28 weeks with the dts, every time I questioned it, they said it was only a tiny anount and wasn't increasing, but after 4 checks I asked them to send a sample off, which they did. It was nothing. But if it happens again, I'd question it to put your mind at ease.

Thanks everyone, I am actually being induced on saturday anyway so will be back at the hospital pretty soon, just feeling a bit stressed today after being told about the induction and then seeing that in my notes.

I would say that one + with bp that is that much higher than usual and a headache is something to worry about. You need to get your bp checked again tomorrow. It might well be normal, but it might be the beginning of pre eclampsia. Keep an eye on the babys movements too. Hope it all works out well. Why are you being induced at only 40 weeks?

Bky · 13/03/2008 20:48

Reduced fetal movements, had a scan today and they said they would like to induce, will be 40+3 on Saturday.

Last time I had a hospital appointment my blood pressure was up too, today I went on my own and was left sat in a room for AGES on my own not knowing what was happening or what outcome of scan was, which probably has a lot to do with raised blood pressure.

Headache is better now have had a chance to sit down and have a meal.

Do you think if I called docters tomorrow a nurse would be able to take my blood pressure for me just to check or does all pregnancy stuff have to go through midwives?

It should definately be a mw or a gp who checks you as the nurse will not have the training to know what is normal in pregnancy. If they are worried enough to induce you on the result of the scan then they should definately be checking you tomorrow. If I were you contact your community midwife, and request a home visit, if they are not able to do that arrange to pop up to be checked at the maternity ward or day assessment unit. It will 98% likely be fine, but it is worth checking. If you have any severe headaches or visual disturbances in the meantime phone your labour ward. It all sounds gloomy and worrying, but I'm sure it will be ok. Good luck with the induction and make sure you post a birth announcement.

Agree with maxbear, raised bp and one plus of protein is potentially the beginnings of pre-eclampsia - I was kept in hospital with bp of 140/90 and + protein (also on basis of blood tests). Hope you manage to get your bp checked today - definitely better to be safe.

In the meantime remember symptoms of pre-eclampsia are headaches, visual disturbances, sudden swelling (esp in hands, face and feet) or pain under the ribs. If you have any of these get yourself to a doctor asap.

Good luck with the induction
