am what i think is 8 weeks preg tom, saw doc at 5 weeks and then had blood tests done at 6 weeks. have booked my scan for 12 weeks but couldn't see midwife until 13 weeks for booking - was told no other appointment availble.

been having few niggly pains but main thing is i'm huge - 2nd baby so expected to be a little bigger but this is crazy. i look about 4-5 months and everyone keeps saying so. i looked at my dates and could be a bit wrong - last af was 18th jan but was really light so if it was the one before i'd be 13 weeks preg tom (5 week cycles!)

so i called my doc today after nagging from firends and she was so rude! told me it appeared all i wanted was a scan and what was wrong with me? i said i just wanted to confirm and reassure myself but she was really off saying there had to be amedical reason! are pains and not sure of dates not enough.

anyway she told me that she could move my midwife appointment to two weeks before, told her i was cocnerned about my scan date as if i'm worng then i'd be 17 weeks at first scan! she waffled on for a bit more and said all she could do. then rang me back in 2 minutes asying she could fit me in with the midwife next weds! ffs thought there were no appointments and i didn't 'need' to be seen.

sorry rant over! anyone else had trouble with docs in early preg. feel quite angry about this today!

Once you get past 12/13 weeks then your uterus would be able to be felt above the pubic bone. By 16w the fundus is somewhere between navel and top of pubic bone iirc. So it should be possible to tell approx. how far you are with an abdominal examination. Maybe ask the gp for an appt. to examine you in a week or so.

Not excusing her behaviour, but it sounds like you caught her at a bad time, she thought about it and realised she was being unreasonable and then reassessed the situation. Don't want to scare you but are you sure there is only one in there?

Sorry to hear about your bad experience - some GPs are just sooo cr*P! Yes, I had a v bad experience with GP in early pg - this is my 3rd pg after losing two previous pgs (all IVF) and so, as you can imagine, anxiety levels were off the scale. Went to see GP in early stages to request extra monitoring and was told there was no point as couldn't stop me having another m/c and I might as well go away and prepare for the worst!!!

I went away and found another GP instead! He has been completely amazing and said I could go and see him every day if it helped (I have resisted the temptation to be that paranoid!).

Anyway, long and short of it is that, if poss, I would get another GP and push for an early appt to put your mind at rest. Petitfilou is right, it could be more than one, which makes it even more important that you get early monitoring.

Good luck.

thanks for the replies.

spoldge - did think about seeing another doc but the other in the practice is her husband! may change practices but will see how midwfie goes on wed.

juuule - she did seem a little less 'off' with me when she rang back the second time but i think she was just glad that she wouldn't have to see me herself!

petit - that's something i'm concerned about - dr knows there are twins on dh's side of family and put it on my records!

pains seemed to have eased again so it's really just my size and hopefully midwife can feel my tummy on weds and see how far along i am ish. thanks again for replies.

Em, hopefully the midwife will put your mind at rest nexr week

MaureenMLove · 14/03/2008 13:18

That's a bit off EM. If you're really concerned, why don't you go to the doctors and tell him you have severe pains? He'll have to send you to EPU then and you'll get a scan.

Is that a bit off?
