Could it be twins?

Hi everyone! Looking for opinions regarding the scan photos posted below. Had the scan a week ago, it’s my 3rd baby, measuring 7w exactly. Saw a heartbeat and all is well. But, I have been extremely worse off morning sickness wise during this pregnancy then my previous two (both girls), and a few close friends have suggested it could be due to twins! Anyway, looking through a video generated during the scan, it looks as though there are two sacks? I didn’t notice it whilst having the scan or I’d have asked my sonographer. I’m assuming it is something unrelated to the pregnancy as sonographer didn’t mention it at all during scan, but very curious to learn what it is! Does anyone know what I’m looking at? Could it be twins or something else? Thanks! For reference, in the first two photos the ‘sack’ that baby is in is on the right.

I was much more sick with my boy than my girl. I was also much more tired as already had a child.

you might be feeling it more because you're more run down in general/it's a boy.

I would be surprised if the sonographer didn't mention anything as at 7 weeks I'd expect a twin pregnancy to be pretty clear. especially if it was progressing normally.

however that's not to say its impossible for a twin to be hiding in the early stages. it's just unlikely.

Bells3032 · 02/12/2023 20:21

I would expect they'd be able to see a twin at 7 weeks. They deff did with me at the same gestation. Likely just you being unable to read the scan

I had 2 boys then a girl. With my daughter I was so, so, so poorly. She drained every ounce of energy I had and I throw up until 30 weeks!

OverTheCountryClub · 02/12/2023 20:58

I don't know about the scan (although surely the sonographer would have said?) but I had such bad sickness the first time I was diagnosed with HG, prescribed medication, signed off work....yet my second I was fine. Only 2 years apart and both boys! I think pregnancy symptoms can just vary and it's not necessarily indicative of anything!

An additional, developing pregnancy is not the kind of thing a professional sonographer is going to 1) miss 2) fail to mention, and it's not going to be something an untrained amateur picks up afterwards from the same images that the professional was looking at.

congratulations on your pregnancy!

Could always get another private scan if you are worried it was missed / want a second opinion.

looks like it could perhaps be shadowing rather than a second sac?
Here is an example of shadow artefact caused by a gallstone.

Could it be twins?

Yes I think you are right, there is shadowing to the left so that’s probably what I’m seeing! Thanks so much x

@cherrychapstickk Oh really! I’ve always believed the old wives tale ‘morning sickness worse with a girl’! I did do a sneakpeek gender test (the reason I had this scan was to determine if I was definitely over 6 weeks as that’s the margin in which the gender blood test claims to work) and my results came back girl! I am not 100% trusting of that though so only time will tell. It would be lovely to have a boy after 2 girls but of course a healthy baby is all that I can ask for. Thanks for your reply!

@Bells3032 i would hope so yes, however the sonographer did say she wasn’t getting a very clear view or images, probably from my lack of being able to keep fluids down! And it was an external ultrasound, not internal which may have got a better view.

@SylvieLaufeydottir yes that’s what I thought, I was just interested to learn what it was if it was not another pregnancy, as both ‘sacks?!’ Look very similar in size and are quite close together. The ultrasound tech did say she was struggling to get a good view (I struggled keeping down fluids before the scan, and I opted for an external scan rather than internal which would have probably got better views!) I only spotted it on a video generated after the scan and it was only on screen a matter of a second, I didn’t notice it during the scan itself or I would have asked my sonographer. I have my 12w nhs scan booked for the 22nd so hoping to get better images then.

@OverTheCountryClub Yes I think you are right. I was just expecting smooth sailing as my last 2 pregnancy’s I was very lucky to have experienced minimal sickness and no nausea at all, the sickness went as quick as it came! There are only 11 months between my first two girls, and I will now have a 3 year gap between my youngest (currently) and this new baby. I think I’m just looking for something to blame my sickness&nausea on!

LOL. Do you not think if it was twins the sonographer might have mentioned it?!

Candyflossabc1 · 03/12/2023 09:33

@ProvisionsOnTheDock not if she missed it! Of course I think if she’d have noticed it she would have said. But it was only hovered over for a second on the video and I have the full scan video downloaded to my phone, so she may have just been focusing on the embryo she was measuring rather then looking elsewhere. This was also a very quick 4 min scan as all I wanted to know was dates (not too interested in which ovary released the egg and all that jazz I saw in my first 2 early pregnancy scans with my other children) So could’ve been that I may have been rushing her a bit and she overlooked it. I’m not sure! Just asking for opinions if it doesn’t look like a second pregnancy what does it look like because to me both “sacks” look very similar in size/colour/shape & are very close together. A previous comment suggested a shadow which I think is very likely.

There is someone on the march due date thread who had a second baby that wasn't mentioned by the sonographer at an early scan but her husband thought he saw something, so it can happen but I imagine it's quite rare! Only time will tell I guess!

Candyflossabc1 · 03/12/2023 10:39

@Lola871 Oh that’s very interesting! I have seen a few videos online where ladies have had early scans and a twin has been missed, so I knew it was a possibility but i am aware also that it is a very rare occurrence. I was only just measuring 7 weeks so it was very early indeed, and didn't get great views as it was an external. I have my 12w nhs scan booked for 22nd this month so I haven’t got too long to wait for a longer, more detailed scan which hopefully will put my nerves at ease!
