I ovulated from both ovaries but only 1 baby at 8 week scan

Hard to think of a title for this question!

Ok so I had my first scan today at 7weeks 6 days (accurate) and the scan lady said I ovulated from both ovaries and she was surprised to only see 1 baby in there (especially as I'm 42 and twins are more common in older women)

There's a part of me that hopes that a second baby miraculously appears at the 12 week scan...
has anyone had this happen?

OP posts:

I didn’t know that they could tell this on a scan several weeks after ovulation.

anyway - it seems unlikely. Possibly a second eg was fertilised but didn’t implant?

LavenderSweetPea · 30/11/2023 06:53

I'm not sure why she was surprised. If you think of all the months people TTC and ovulate once and get no babies, it's perfectly possible to ovulate twice and just for one to fertilise/implant.

Fwiw when I was doing fertility treatment I'd regularly ovulate twice but never ended up with a twin pregnancy.

I’m sure I was told on my 12 weeks scan which ovary had ovulated so it seems they can tell!

as above though OP, many women ovulate every month and time sex correctly yet don’t conceive, it’s not guaranteed. I think it’s unlikely a second baby was hiding and will appear in 4 or 5 weeks I’m afraid.

Why would you want twins? That was my worst nightmare at every scan for my three!

Because OP is 42 and presumably feels she has limited chance of another pregnancy?

Quite an insensitive post, no?

science is brilliant!

Pocodaku · 30/11/2023 07:27

Sorry OP, it’s unlikely. Two eggs doesn’t mean two fertilised eggs. And two fertilised eggs doesn’t necessarily mean two viable embryos &c.

Daisies12 · 30/11/2023 07:28

I’m surprised by the comment she made that seems pretty ignorant. Likely there are far more times women ovulate don’t get pregnant than do get pregnant.

Not really no, twins can have significant complications risking both babies so actively looking forward or wanting that makes no sense if the op is hoping for the best chance of a successful pregnancy!

Agree with this…
so many eggs are “not babies”

it’s vanishing unlikely it will be twins as at 7 weeks there would be an egg sac at least…

That's a bit of an odd comment from a health professional!

Twimum23 · 30/11/2023 08:53

@TomatoSandwiches ive got 5 month old twins and wouldn’t change it for the world

Starlightstarbright2 · 30/11/2023 08:55

I had fertility treatment . I was told two eggs ( before conception )

one egg fertilised.

ChateauMargaux · 30/11/2023 08:57

Very strange comment from a health professional.

38% of births are to women aged between 30 and 34.. 4% of those are twin births.

5% of births are ro women aged over 40 .. 7% of those are twin births.

So yes.. Twin births are more common in your age group, but 7% chance of twin pregnancy would not warrant an expression of surprise.. in my non medical opinion.

Whether fertility drugs or IVF are involved would also impact the prevalence of twin pregnancies. .. there are many factors which impact the rates in the case of assisted fertility... but even then.. 2 implanted fertilised embryos in women over 40 .. the rate of twins is between 0 and 16%.

Of course you wouldn't; what an odd thing to say. At 42, multiple pregnancies are a complication with many risks. That's what pp is saying, not to regret having twins.

Farmersweeklyreader · 30/11/2023 09:17

I had ivf, 2 embryos put back in on day 5. On my 7 week scan one baby was confirmed.
I spent a good few weeks wondering (worrying!) about where the other embryo was and if it would show up on the 12 week scan. Obviously I knew it wasn’t going to but didn’t stop me thinking about it.
I was 41 when my baby was born and did wonder if it would be my only chance at pregnancy & motherhood. It probably is but we are so thankful for our baby and the wonders of modern science 🙂

Janedoelondon · 30/11/2023 21:59

I had this! Ovulated from both ovaries, but only one fertilised. My little boy is now 15 months old!

MoonIightDreamer · 01/12/2023 08:07

You may have released 2 eggs but that's not a guarantee both were fertilised, made it to day 5 and implanted.
I had ivf, transferred 2 embryos and I'm pregnant with only one baby. Not every egg equals a baby

Actually, at 42, twins would be a very high risk pregnancy. Not something anyone who’s struggling to get pregnant would embrace.

Given that OP was clearly hoping for twins from the tone of her first post, I still consider the poster I answered to have been insensitive

cherrylemonapple · 01/12/2023 21:35

she will have seen the corpus luteum. at nearly 8 weeks it would be difficult to miss a twin pregnancy
