Pregnancy, fibroid a c-section

FirstPregnancyWoman · 29/11/2023 22:28

Hello

I am currently pregnant, and I have been diagnosed with a fibroid that:

  • is blocking vaginal delivery
  • stopping the baby to move head down
  • right in the spot where a horizontal c-section would be performed

In addition, I have an increased risk of bleeding post c-section.

Has anyone experienced the same and had a delivery with the NHS?

Thank you

No advice but bumping for you

Your care will be consultant led, and you will be booked in for an elective c-section.
You will likely need to have an extensive pre-assessment which will involve cross matching your blood for the blood Bank to ensure that there will be units available for you should you need them.
It will sound scary, and this isn't what you expect at all when you plan for a family but you will be in the best hands.

@ToBeOrNotToBee how early do you usually get this sorted by the consultant?

From the scans I have had, it sounds like I am in the same position @FirstPregnancyWoman how many weeks are you?

FirstPregnancyWoman · 01/12/2023 20:00

@LeafyGreenery 31 weeks
Had a scan today, baby has moved from breech to transverse, but now the fibroid is even more central and completely blocking the exit...WTF!!!!

My friend, not I this country, had large fibroid removed at same time as section…it might be worth asking about, especially if it bothers you or you’d like more children.

Nutellanjam · 01/12/2023 20:09

I had this altho was not in uk. I was huge in late pregnancy as I also had extra amniotic fluid, due to the fibroid.
Had c section and they did match my blood etc in case a transfusion was needed. But it was ok in the end. I didn’t get the fibroid removed at the time but I did then go back and have it removed about 8 months later but by then it had shrunk a bit so they could do a lesser op to remove.
it was ok though !

@FirstPregnancyWoman sounds worrying but hopefully it means baby will eventually turn cephalic position which will help birth. If the fibroid blocks horizontally, would they do a vertical cut instead? But if the fibroid is more central over the vagina, would that leave space for them to now do the horizontal cut? They should have a better idea of what they plan to do soon

Yes, I am in the same situation and I have some other complications as well pre-eclampsia and previous surgery on uterus.

I am going to have c-section on NHS this coming Tuesday. I can share my experience later with you. For me the baby was transverse up until week 35 and then week 36 she moved from transverse to heads down but the position of the baby really doesn't matter for c-section. So don't worry about that.

Also, I have been told that although they call this high risk c-section, it is a straight forward operation and it will be done by consultants who routinely do these kinds of operation.

FirstPregnancyWoman · 02/12/2023 11:48

@Greenpeasnwham I have already asked, they don't do it as too high risk of blood loss

@ai38 can you please keep me posted? Is your fibroid blocking the exit? What type of cut are they going to do?

I’ve realised I’ve posted this in the wrong section so sorry!

I’m postpartum mum of 8m old and have some questions. I know it’s after the fact but I just wanted to see if anyone else had experienced anything similar as I haven’t come across anything when I’ve looked into it!

I had an emergency c section ( after many induction tactics). During my c section I realised things were taking longer than they should have, and after the surgeon told me they had cut through a fibroid and I had lost a fair amount of blood.

i didn’t know I had fibroid/s and it wasn’t picked up on any of my scans. I guess I just wondered if anyone else had experienced this at all or had any further insight?
