Pregnant and fibroid - BUPA insurance

FirstPregnancyWoman · 29/11/2023 22:19

Hello

I am currently pregnant, and I have been diagnosed with a fibroid that:

  • is blocking vaginal delivery
  • stopping the baby to move head down
  • right in the spot where a horizontal c-section would be performed

In addition, I have an increased risk of bleeding post c-section.

Has anyone experienced the same and managed to get a c-section on BUPA?

Thank you

You would be able to get a c-section on the nhs, I don't know about BUPA (certainly near me you would struggle to find a private maternity unit i think?)

Callmemummynotmaaa · 30/11/2023 01:56

OP are you in Ireland? Or outside the UK? In the UK you can request a c-section (without reason) as choice under NICE guidelines. Typically private hospitals here are limited and hard to access (and often not the care of choice for those with complicated pregnancies).

If in Ireland - the public private system makes it a bit more complicated. BUT I’ve had a c section in the public system and it sounds like you would have appropriate need. Lots of people I know had CSections and accessed aspects of private care (including own rooms) after birth.

It certainly used to be possible to claim for a c-section, but it's dependent on the type of policy you have. Those linked to an employer can be more likely to pay as the companies can dictate terms to a greater extent.

I'd contact BUPA and simply ask them what information they need to make a decision and get the ball rolling sooner rather than later. Is the plan to have the fibroid removed at the same time as the c-section?

How far along are you OP?

I had 3 fibroids and one at the back of the cervix and one at the front, blocking delivery.

These can move up with time as the baby grows and gets bigger.

Mines moved out the way on both occasions and I had a vaginal delivery with very little bleeding.

If you're consultant led, can you ask?

thelonemommabear · 30/11/2023 05:51

Nope BUPA don't cover anything related to pregnancy or fertility

GreatGateauxsby · 30/11/2023 06:13

My health insurance covers nothing pregnancy related.

is there a reason you won’t have an nhs C-section.

Tbh in your situation I’d rather be in the royal free bs the lindo wing anyway…

Check your policy certificate, it will tell you what is covered.
you may also have Bupa Blua (check the spelling) where you can also check along with GP24/7 - off the top of my head from our work cover.

I am exactly in the same situation as you and am going to have a section on NHS soon. I will let you know how it goes afterwards.

FirstPregnancyWoman · 01/12/2023 20:02

@ai38 can you please let me know, and the type of cut that they are going to make? How big is your fibroid, and is it blocking the exit?

OP posts:
ai38 · 01/12/2023 23:36

@FirstPregnancyWoman The fibroid is around 6-7 cm. It's blocking the exit. As for the cut, they said they won't know exactly until they open me up and assess the exact location of the fibroid with their own eyes :) They won't cut through the fibroid.

Don't worry too much. I have had my fair share of fibroids in life. Two previous surgeries to remove fibroids and now having one which has grown during pregnancy. But I have been reassured that this is a common case and the consultants know how to deal with it. They will have more teams/equipment in theatre in case the bleeding gets out of hand. Also, your surgery will be done by a consultant not a registrar. I mean someone more senior and with more experience.

@ai38 how did the c-section go?
