Accidentally eaten raw food!!!

Hello

On Saturday, I accidentally consumed what I believed to be a small amount of undercooked pork (2 dim sum). I purposely made myself vomit after as I wanted to get as much out as I could but I know I wasn’t able to get it all out. I have been reading things on the internet about risk of toxoplasmosis. I am around 13 weeks pregnant. prior to pregnancy, I was a regular eater of rare steak/ cured meats and also steak tartar when abroad.

I called the emergency midwife helpline who said she wasn’t concerned as it was not in a large quantity. I am still anxious … should I be worried or am I a panicked new time pregnant woman?

Has this happened to anyone else??
Thank you

I don't mean this rudely, but your anxiety about this strikes me as a lot more problematic than a bit of potentially undercooked pork. Making yourself vomit and calling the emergency midwife seems like extreme behaviour.
If you've been anxious in other ways, it might be worth talking to your midwife or GP about your mental health.

You had it Saturday and are still worrying?

Please try to calm down. The worry will be doing more harm than the minute chance of pork making you ill. Listen to the midwife.

It's now Monday evening so presumably if you were going to be ill from it (spontaneously, rather than making yourself vomit) then you would have been by now. A lot of the guidance about what to avoid in pregnancy errs on the extreme side of caution. Try not to worry although I know that's easier said that done.

You've had advice from a medical expert, I'm not sure how strangers on the internet can help more.

You need some help for your anxiety

I was not trying to upset anyone. Just looking for some reassurance as pregnancy for the first time has made me anxious and was wondering if this was normal for others

I don’t think it’s normal to be this anxious, no. I also don’t think there is reason to be worried about your baby’s health.

I think you should see a doctor to discuss your mental health. It’s good to get on top of these things before baby is born, work out some good coping strategies. It’s a shame to have out of control anxiety when you have a small child, it spoils the pleasure of being a new parent.

DrMarshaFieldstone · 27/11/2023 22:59

Agree with pp - this is a disruptive level of anxiety and you don’t have to feel this way. There is treatment available.

PricklyPear1234 · 27/11/2023 22:59

Don't worry OP.. I know the feeling.. For me it was Christmas time, I drank my merry way through the fizz and consumed a bucket load of liver paté.. my anxiety was through the roof when I find out I was up the duff soon after (I was paranoid about drinking too much booze and consuming too much vit A!!!). Everything turned out fine with no long lasting damage to anyone! Although my anxiety gave me a few extra grey hairs I didn't need! Good luck with your pregnancy, it's a happy time - try to enjoy it x

I think actually it is not unusual to be anxious, I had a friend who worked for a maternity charity and every day women would phone in tears, realising they had eaten some pate, or soft cheese, and one year there was a scare about Perrier (?) You just don’t want to think you’ve done anything harmful. But you’ve consulted a medical professional and it’s just time to relax and not worry about this particular thing any more.

Garman · 27/11/2023 23:08

No not a normal level of anxiety.

newnameforanewday · 27/11/2023 23:12

I disagree and think it is normal to worry with a first pregnancy BUT you are fine. It didn't make you ill. Most raw meat doesn't and isn't harmful. Obviously, it's best avoided when pregnant but you are fine and I'm sure your baby is too.

I accidentally drank ONE ginger beer I thought was alcohol free. When I realised it wasn't, I freaked out. Seems silly now but it didn't at the time. He's asleep next door and in no way harmed (he's 9 now!)

DrMarshaFieldstone · 27/11/2023 23:20

You think it’s normal to make yourself vomit out of anxiety?

Jane457Sem · 27/11/2023 23:44

thank you for understanding. As a first time mum there is nothing worse than believing you may have caused harm. The anxiety is through the roof. I have also suffered with HG and have not been my usual self.

I had the exact same thing happen to me around 7 weeks, I was really concerned that the pork looked too pink. I made myself vomit too - I have had food poisoning from undercooked pork before and it was awful. No way I was going through that again. Puked it up and we just had our 12 week scan - all is well with my twin babies! I am sure you and baby will be fine 💓
