prescribed Aspirin but scared to take

Hi all, I think I just want some reassurance really.
I'm currently 9+4, with my 3rd pregnancy (had 2 previous early losses, one at 7 weeks, the other at 9 weeks).

I'm on progesterone this time round to support the pregnancy, and so far so good. This is the furthest I've got. Saw the midwife last week, she said I am triggering for needing aspirin, due to having a blood clotting disorder and family history of pre-eclampsia.

I've got the prescription but I'm so scared to take it.. it's 150mg once a day at night, I'm just so terrified in case I cause bleeding and then another MC.

I know I'm being silly because so far I've had no spotting or anything and everything seems to be going alright. I am just so scared of something going wrong now.

Has anyone else had 150mg and did you have any effects from it?? Is there a chance it could cause a MC?

Congratulations on your pregnancy and I am so sorry for your previous losses.
The asprin is most likely being prescribed in order to help prevent clotting of your blood, which will help support the pregnancy. If you are worried you should contact your midwife team and ask them to clarify the prescription but as you have a blood clotting disorder this is a likely reason for being given it.

Are you sure you she didn’t say to wait until your 12 weeks to start this Aspirin?

Thank you @Readingtheworld

No she didn't say anything about 12 weeks she just said the Dr will issue a prescription for you to collect, so I presumed she meant for me to start it straight away.

I started on aspirin as soon as I told the midwifery team I was pregnant. They phoned me within a couple of days and set up a prescription because I'd had preeclampsia last pregnancy. Started taking it straight away and DD(9 months tomorrow) is merrily snoring away on my chest. Take the aspirin, they prescribed it for a reason

150mg aspirin is sometimes known as ‘baby aspirin’. I was suggested to take it during the first 12 weeks of an ivf pregnancy. I believe it’s very safe. No ill effects for me.

talk to your doctor again if you’re not sure. I know pregnancy following miscarriage can be a very worrying time.

best wishes xx

PaintBySticker · 27/11/2023 19:15

By calling it ‘baby aspirin’ I don’t mean it’s meant for babies or even pregnant women. I think it’s called that because it’s lower than the usual dose

Ren34 · 27/11/2023 19:19

I would double check with her or your GP if meant to be from 12 weeks (although possible unproven benefits apparently to starting earlier) but generally the midwife will arrange the prescription at the booking appointment but you would start it from 12 week. It’s given to help reduce the risk of the placenta not embedding properly thus reducing the risk of both pre eclampsia and baby not growing as well

Bizjustgotreal · 27/11/2023 19:19

I'm on the 150mg a day due to pre-eclampsia in previous pregnancy. Only issue is it makes my heartburn worse. I've heard of it being prescribed earlier than 12 weeks for people who have had miscarriages.

I've had one miscarriage, but midwife did t feel it nec. Start earlier than 12.

Congratulations on your pregnancy and best of luck!

Devilsmommy · 27/11/2023 19:19

I had to take the same amount of aspirin throughout my pregnancy because of severely high blood pressure. No I'll effects and I've got a beautiful 14mo now. Take it if it's been prescribed, they have given it for a good reason 😊

Hello, I was prescribed aspirin in pregnancy as I had low papp-a. I was told it thins the blood, helping the placenta do its job. Baby is 7 months old and healthy. At my 6 week check, the GP told me to take aspirin as soon as I am pregnant if I am lucky enough to have another child.

Good luck! Ask lots of questions, they seem to expect you to just know what's going on.

PocketPoL · 27/11/2023 19:22

I took 150mg aspirin during my second pregnancy because of an issue with my placenta during my first birth. I was really worried about doing so at first - I completely understand feeling that way. I asked lots of questions and understood that the risks of not taking it were far higher than any risks of taking it. I actually spoke to a different midwife and a consultant because I felt that my first midwife didn't really reassure me (so please remember you can do the same and ask for a second opinion if you need one). It was absolutely fine, I had a lot of nosebleeds and I wonder if this was linked. But my second birth was much better and my placenta was healthy - I do feel that the aspirin helped to make that possible. They get you to stop taking it a certain number of weeks before the due date.

LBOCS2 · 27/11/2023 19:23

I had aspirin in my second pregnancy because I had preeclampsia in my first. It was fine, and before having DD1 I had three miscarriages. It was fine.

linziere · 27/11/2023 19:30

I had baby aspirin prescribed from the start with my IVF pregnancy as well as injections due to increased risk for thrombophilia and a previous failed FET. Only had the one embryo left and no ovaries to make any more so they threw everything at me to make it stick 😂- I'm so glad they did because I've got a 2 year old DD running around like a lunatic right now and I put it down to putting those meds on board.

BackOfTheMum5net · 27/11/2023 21:08

I took it during my pregnancy initially due to hereditary risk of pre-eclampsia and also because of low PAPP A.

Happy to report I have a very healthy baby boy lying next to me!

LavenderSweetPea · 27/11/2023 21:18

For those who were taking aspirin due to low Papp a, which week in pregnancy did you stop taking it?

veeolay · 27/11/2023 21:31

I was on 150mg from 12 weeks with my 2nd pregnancy due to high BP in previous pregnancy. I didn't notice any negative effects. The adult normal dose of aspirin is something like 300-600mg every 4-6 hours. So you can see that 150mg once a day is really a very small dose and considered perfectly safe.

If you have a blood clotting disorder I would absolutely take it, a lot of early miscarriages can be cause by small clots in the placenta and umbilical cord and the baby aspirin helps thin the blood so it doesn't clot as easily. Many many women are prescribed it after early losses.

I wish you all the best with your pregnancy Smile

MrsAnon6 · 27/11/2023 21:56

I was prescribed aspirin during my pregnancy for the same reason as you and I have a lovely healthy little girl. It's perfectly safe. They wouldn't be allowed to prescribe it if it wasn't.

eurochick · 27/11/2023 22:02

My ivf clinic prescribed low dose aspirin as standard from bfp onwards. Ivf clinics trade off their success rates so there is no way they would have recommended it if negatively affected them.

The issue I had was buying it. Once I was showing some pharmacists refused to sell it me. I had to send my husband to get it. It really bloody irritated me. That's probably a different thread though.

seven201 · 27/11/2023 22:15

I had found miscarriages. I am currently feeding my newborn and took 150 aspirin from conception until 36 weeks. For my previous successful pregnancy I was on 75 and did have pre-eclampsia and I do think the higher dose prevented me from getting it this time.

Workawayxx · 27/11/2023 22:21

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

I took 150 mg aspirin in my pregnancy after 3 x mc in a row and that one worked out so it’s a miracle drug to me (could have just been luck but I do put it down to the aspirin). Lots of people are recommended to take it, if I remember right there was a list of factors and if you had any 2 or more they recommended you take it (over 40, history of preeclampsia, bmi over 30, twin pregnancy etc etc). So it can’t be harmful if they’re recommending it to so many. Wishing you all the best.

Homeboddy49 · 27/11/2023 22:32

I have also been diagnosed with a blood clotting disorder and have had miscarriages. I was wasn't on Aspirin but prescribed Clexane injections which I took everyday to prevent clotting. I took these up to 12 weeks I think after the birth. Maybe you could bring this up with your Doctor?

IMO I would take the Aspirin, they have commonly been prescribed after baby loss and sometimes we need a little help along the long. That is Amazing you haven't had any bleeding so far. It's the most worrying time. Try to take each day at a time and try to find time to relax and enjoy your pregnancy as wel. Good luck xxx
