positive experience of c-section at week 37?

First time pregnant and 37+3 today. I had a scheduled c-section for 11th of December (week 39) but today at my appointment, the consultant told me that she thinks I might be developing mild pre-eclampsia and she would rather bring the c-section forward to this week.

I have had high protein in the urine since week 31 but blood pressure has remained borderline/normal throughout and I have had no other symptoms of pre-eclampsia. They have been monitoring me more closely recently and all blood tests, scans, etc have been fine. It's just the protein in the urine that is the basis for diagnosis of mild pre-eclampsia.

We are now waiting for a call from the hospital to reschedule the section and the consultant said she would like this to happen anytime between now and next Monday. She did say that babies born via c-section at week 37/38 are at a higher risk of respiratory issues (compared to week 39) and there is a risk that baby would need to spend some time in NICU anywhere from few hours to few days. Obviously, the thought of this is already worrying me and DH, especially because our growth scans show the baby to be on the smaller side (around 40 percentile).

Was wondering if anyone here had a smooth c-section around 37-38 week without the baby developing any serious issues after birth or needing to go to NICU?

lI was 37+1, planned csection due to medical reasons. Little one spent a night in special care to keep an eye on her lungs but was allowed to leave after.

DS born by c section at 37+5 no issues just quite small at 5lbs 15oz

I had a planned c-section at exactly 38 weeks and baby was absolutely fine, zero health concerns and we were home within 24 hours. Was a very positive experience.

37 weeks for my 1st section.
i had pretty much full blown pre eclampsia.
Baby was teeny, 5lbs 4oz.(IUGR)
No special care, breast fed straight away, home in 3 days only because it was an emergency section with a general anaesthetic.

2nd section at 37 weeks again, pre eclampsia, 5lbs 6oz, no special care, I was home within 24 hours of that one. Again breast fed straight away.

No respiratory issues with either.

1st is a strapping 6ft tall lad in full time work, thriving and in no way affected.
2nd is a maths whizz who thinks he’s going to be a professional footballer.. again, zero adverse effects whatsoever.

Thank you all for your reassurance. Waiting to get a time from hospital now.

37+1 planned section due to medical issue. No complications and no concerns with baby. Was home in 2 days.

OP I had v similar circumstances to you, but they had me in for steroid injections for baby's lungs beforehand, which I think is pretty common. Did your consultant mention that? If it's not a complete emergency, and a deadline of Monday is not, then there is time.

We were touch and go with NICU but stayed out. Treated for jaundice and an infection on the ward. Breastfeeding v hard. My blood pressure didn't regulate well post birth, so between DC and my issues we were in for nearly a week (bit grim) and there were several returns to triage in the days immediately after discharge.

Absolutely no lasting effects for DC, strong as an ox right from leaving the hospital. Born tiny, but caught up easily over first year.

Wishing you and baby well.x

I had a c-section at 37 weeks because of pre-eclampsia. I had steroid injections to mature DD’s lungs. Believe me when I say that they worked! 🤣

It was very smooth despite technically being an emergency c-section. DD was monitored for 24 hours because her temp was low and her blood sugar was also low, I think. Maybe it was high? She was also very small which I think made them more concerned about temp and blood sugar than usual.

Anyway, she is absolutely perfect and fine now, more than a year later.

Hope your experience is as positive as mine was, OP. Good luck!

I had an emergency c section at 37 weeks and didn't have any issues with the baby. She was 5lb 9oz and very strong from birth.

DS was an emergency section at 37 weeks. Slightly blue but born yelling and in rude health. No issues at all.
