What does this mean? I’m going to do a gestational diabetes test at my next appointment. Until then I’m worried about what I should be eating and feel guilty that it is my fault. What does it mean for labour? I’m already well into my third trimester.

Unlike my username I haven’t actually been eating that many biscuits

I also have this concern however I don’t have GD. I have asked and they keep saying ‘it means you’re having a happy healthy baby’ which isn’t that helpful if I’m honest.

Until Friday I was due to give birth in a low risk pathway however I will most likely be induced at 39 weeks.

do you know how the other measurements compare? I haven’t had this with a previous pregnancy so really not sure what to expect.

My DD’s abdomen measured large, I was tested for GD which I didn’t have. I did have polyhydramnios though so not sure if that was a factor? I was induced at 39+3 and she was just a big baby (9lbs7oz), no other intervention needed other than that

MrsJ6921 · 27/11/2023 13:43

@BiscuitLover3678 this is my first baby so I have no idea! Tbh I’m taking everything with a pinch of salt as I’ve been told she was measuring big, then small and then back to being ‘bigger’

I have T2 diabetes and my DS had a larger abdominal circumference than what it should have been to be in proportion to his head etc. I was induced anyway because of the T2 but you could see his belly was a bit bigger, it has become more in proportion as he has gotten older (now 9mo). It is common for diabetes/gestational diabetes babies to have this although my DD didn't so it is not always the case.

I was told this with my last pregnancy. Had several NHS scans later on and all sonographers agreed he had a large abdominal circumference. I had to be tested for GD which was negative. They wanted to induce me because of it. Thankfully I went into labour naturally and my son was born a healthy 7lb 5oz with a perfectly normal tummy. We had no vests to fit him as we were expecting a huge baby! They said he must simply have been hunched over inside me more than most giving an incorrect measurement. It’s not a perfect science.

What gestation was he born?

@LittleRobins I feel like this could also be the case for my little one! She’s been head down for quite some time now and the shape of my bump is quite ‘bottom heavy’ so I feel like she’s quite squashed together.

LittleRobins · 27/11/2023 22:00

Yes, it’s more common than people realise for the predictions to be wrong. All the measurements they take are a very rough guide. He was born at 40 weeks so all perfectly normal. I was worried like you when I was pregnant with him. I’m now pregnant again and my bump is already huge so I’m wondering if I’ll go through the same thing with this little (or not so little) one!
