Hi all, looking for advice if anyone has had similar! 6 weeks pregnant, brushing my teeth is causing me to heave a lot.. it started a couple of weeks ago and is getting worse. This morning, I couldn't stop heaving to the point that I couldn't breathe and it was like a panic attack, cold sweating and tears in my eyes. Feels like I'm going to throw up, but nothing comes out. Something I can't avoid doing 🙈

Had the same. Got easier as the pregnancy went on but yeh, no advice for you sorry 🙈

Yep had this as well, one of the first signs of pregnancy with both kids. Unfortunately mine last until the end, even when all other sickness had gone, brushing my teeth still made me gag. But whatever you do, you have to persevere because teeth get less strong in pregnancy so don't skimp on teeth brush especially if you're actually vomiting too

Try unflavoured toothpaste, a smaller toothbrush and doing it more gently, spitting often. Generally reduce sugar in your diet, use mouth wash and interdental brushes, floss.. Make sure you have adequate calcium in your diet and remember brushing last thing at night is the most important so dont skip it.

Sometimes watching something on your phone helps distract, opening a window so you get fresh air in the bathroom and sitting on a closed toilet seat.

It is awful in 1st and 2nd trying to brush teeth, just try a quick round the mouth once, without prolonging the time the paste is in your mouth, and don't open mouth too wide! Never seen so much bile before!!!

Silverfoxlady · 23/11/2023 10:27

Yep, going through this too. Had a word with my dentist, and he advised to try and brush but make sure to floss and to use mouthwash to also help.

It is horrible, isn’t it. Sometimes I just throw up, and then get upset I have to brush again!

Thank you all for your replies, will try these tips! I wouldn't skip brushing, I'm so funny about my teeth and fear something being wrong with them 😆 sorry to hear you're going through this too @Silverfoxlady hopefully these help you too!

I had this and i bought a kids tooth paste which was fruity flavoured. It really helped. Mine last about 4 - 6 weeks. I'm 19 weeks now and have been using corsadol tooth paste and find that fine because it isn't too minty. Tried colgate yesterday and heaved again!

Also try putting less toothpaste and doing each section, spitting then adding a tiny bit more of toothpaste for the next portion of teeth, like doing your mouth in quarters instead one blob of toothpaste frothing in your mouth all at once.

I had this, every morning brushing my teeth triggered insane vomiting to the point of nosebleeds. Breathing through your nose really helps, like absolutely zero mouth breathing

HarpieDuJour · 23/11/2023 12:12

My dentist told me to chill my toothbrush before brushing. That helped a bit, but with a later pregnancy, only running the toothbrush under the hot tap helped.

I had this and still have it even though other nausea is gone, it occasionally does make me vomit. It’s worse in the evenings for me. On the really bad nights I occasionally end up with just mouthwash but I find it’s brushing the very back teeth that set it off so the rest do get brushed! I’ve found switching to a less strong toothpaste has helped and so has trying to distract myself whilst brushing.

If it’s your very back teeth, my dentist told me to pull my cheek away whilst brushing, it makes it easier to get the toothbrush to the back without feeling like choking.

TheBirdintheCave · 23/11/2023 12:27

Eugh yes, this is horrible. I couldn't brush without vomiting or nearly vomiting for about six weeks. I hope this phase passes quickly for you.

SmokeyToo · 23/11/2023 12:33

I'm not pregnant, but I have a serious health issue that was making me vomit constantly for a few months, earlier this year. Particularly while brushing my teeth. I found brushing my teeth while I'm showering worked best for me. The warm water seemed to help and I didn't panic so much about the urge to throw up because if I did, I was in the shower and it wasn't a big deal. It seemed to help the anxiety around vomiting a lot.

Not read the full thread so sorry if already suggested

The only way I could stop myself vomiting is by humming sort of while brushing

that's funny because cold water ona toothbrush makes me wretch! I only like warm-hot.
