Borderline High Blood Pressure

Hi all.. Just looking for some advice. I have quite bad health anxiety and this pregnancy it has just been a million times worse.
After visiting triage last week they have had concerns about my blood pressure, I’ve been for monitoring today and it was around 138/91.. some readings slightly more and some slightly less. They want me to go back again in 2 days to be checked again. This is my 3rd pregnancy and I’ve never had any issues with the other 2.. Basically just wondering how you felt with high blood pressure? Am I going to start feeling really unwell? Currently apart from being exhausted and slight swelling in my hands and feet I feel fine.

Many Thanks x

I have high blood pressure and pregnant. This is my second pregnancy too.

You will probably feel tired and might have some headaches but they will pass with paracetamol.

The fact that they’ve sent you home and will check you in a couple of days is pretty positive. Have you told them about the swelling?

From my experience, anything over 150 they will keep you in for longer monitoring and discuss possibility of putting you on blood pressure medication. I’ve been on different medications with both pregnancies. My little girl was born with no issues so please don’t worry about side effects.

Best thing I can advise is to contact your midwife and talk about your worries. They will be able to support and reassure you!

Thank you for your reply! Yes they are aware of the swelling. I've just been told if I have any symptoms of preeclampsia I have to go straight up to triage. Hope all goes well for you Smile

Just keep an eye on the swelling and follow their advice. Hopefully they’ve given you a good check over at your previous check up and are all happy with you.

When my blood pressure went high with my first baby I was told to stay home unless swelling got really bad, a bad headache or blood pressure over 150.
When it went over 150 I was in hospital for the night. Sent home for a few hours to try relax and then back again so they were really on the ball with monitoring me. I’m sure they will do the same with you if they are worried!

I had HBP with my first pregnancy. I felt absolutely fine. I developed very mild pre-eclampsia during labour, baby was born happy and healthy.

I had swelling on my hands whenever I'd been on my feet for a while.

They diagnosed at 34 weeks. I was put on labetalol at 36 weeks and induced at 39 weeks.

This pregnancy I've been on 150mg aspirin since 12 weeks and under consultant care, with more midwife appointments than you'd normally get.

Best of luck! You'll be given great care I'm sure.

I’ve had high blood pressure since 12 weeks, now 36 weeks. I have to go to triage if it’s higher than 140/90

my only symptoms really have been headaches that usually ease with paracetamol. I’ve found if I keep on top of fluids I don’t feel too bad most days

I had mild pre-eclampsia in both my pregnancies.

First pregnancy, I was swollen, but I had been for most of my pregnancy. More likely down to the heat than anything. I felt absolutely fine otherwise.

Second pregnancy I had zero swelling but was absolutely knackered. But then I had been exhausted virtually from the moment of conception. Again, I felt absolutely fine otherwise.

I was put on labetalol from the moment pre-eclampsia was confirmed (36 weeks), admitted to hospital, and induced at 37 weeks. Other than DC2 getting stuck trying to make his exit, necessitating an air lift out of the sunroof, their labours and births were uneventful.

Wishing you all the best.

I had pregnancy induced hypertension first time round and was on Labetalol from about 30 weeks. They only put me on meds when it was consistently 150/95 or higher. Second time round I was on aspirin from 12 weeks and I still developed high BP but only needed medication from 37 weeks and a few weeks after birth at 39 weeks I weaned off them.

I didn't feel any symptoms associated with it, and the tablets didn't give me any problems at all. I never had any keytones or protein in urine so it was never preeclampsia.

Thank you all for your experiences! Has really put my mind at ease to know most of you didn’t feel too bad with the high blood pressure. I have been on aspirin since early on due to my mum having preeclampsia, I’m now 35 weeks and there is talk of induction at 39 currently.. I guess if this continues to be a problem they might do an induction earlier? I’m also suffering with extreme SPD which is unbearable especially during the night so as-long as she’s all okay I’m happy for this to be over!

I had no symptoms at all and have been taking labetalol since the first trimester. It gave me a strange tingling in my scalp for a few days until I got used to it but no headaches or any other symptoms and blood pressure remained stable until almost the end when it spiked and required me to stay in for observation.

veeolay · 24/11/2023 13:25

Yes I was induced at 39+1 first time round and had a section 2nd time round at the exact same gestation. Dr told me the first time that it was riskier for me to go to term with high BP when baby would be just fine born at 39 weeks
