I started testing about 2 weeks ago now. At first my levels were all over the place, my fasting levels were always high, pre lunch and dinner levels high. I had norovirus and couldn’t eat anything but kept taking my bloods anyway. Now I’m better I’ve been eating a GD diet and I’ve cut out a lot of the sugar and junk I was eating. My levels are now consistently within range, this includes my fasting levels, even when I’ve had the odd treat like chocolate, all my pre and post meal results are fine. I was prescribed metformin but haven’t picked it up from the pharmacy yet.

Will I still have to take the medication if my GD now seems to be diet controlled? Has anyone else been in the same boat? I usually speak to the diabetes clinic on a Wednesday so I’ll ask them what they think but just wondered if this has happened to anyone else?

No, hopefully you can just remain diet controlled. However, as the pregnancy progresses you may need to move to the tablets.

I managed to remain diet controlled until week 38 then used the medication towards the end

Thanks. That's what I hoped. I can't see them wanting me to go ahead and take medication if I don't need it. I wouldn't want my bloods to be too low. I'll speak to them on Wednesday and say what they say

Being poorly would have definitely affected your levels, it's definitely worth a conversation with your team - as you say it could have been a blip and you don't want the medication making your levels too low if you're already back in range consistently x

Sounds like you're making great progress getting things under control with your diet alone, but worth keeping the metformin as GD can get harder to control the later you get in pregnancy.
