Scoliosis and pregnancy

Hi all

I am currently six weeks pregnant and have scoliosis. I've had corrective surgeries for it years ago (3 surgeries total) which included the spinal fusion, bone graft etc so I have extensive metal work (rods and screws) in my spine.

Does anyone else here have scoliosis? Would be really interested to hear about your pregnancy/delivery experience, if so.

Thanks

Hey, I have scoliosis but not enough to have ever been given any treatments or interventions. When you go to your booking appointment this is something you will tell them, you will get sent to consultant care during pregnancy but they soon discharged me as they realised mine wasn't going to cause any issues but they'd be ready to support you in anyway needed

I've got scoliosis (no treatment needed) and the only impact it had was around 5/6 months when I needed physio.

All four births have been absolutely fine and quick!

Hi OP. Three pregnancies, healthy throughout. Had an epidural for one delivery and a spinal block for another. The third one was too fast for anything but gas and air. Nothing out of the ordinary at all. Scoliosis is not corrected. Best of luck to you!

I don’t have scoliosis but I do have a compressed spine from an accident. I told my midwife at my booking appointment and was referred to an anesthestiologist (sorry can’t spell) to discuss pain relief in birth as the placement of my compression means I may not be able to have an epidural or a spinal if c section is required. I may need to wear a pregnancy back support brace earlier than some people normally would too.

There’s a lot of individual tailored support that seems to be on offer which is good.

bumtrumpet · 19/11/2023 22:01

I found out I had it during my c section. The anaesthetist really struggled with my spinal and told me then that it was twisted but unlikely to ever cause me problems. I had three planned sections so it didn't cause me any issues.

Definitely worth asking to see an obstetric anaesthetist if they don’t automatically arrange it. Spinal metal work can make some of the pain relief and an anaesthetic options more complicated and it’s worth having a plan for all possibilities before you get to the end of pregnancy. HTH

Mention it at booking appointment I was sent to see consultant and also saw an anthesist so he could assess if I could have a C-section if I needed one.

I have scoliosis and had corrective surgery - rods and fused vertebrae.

I've had two pregnancies, no issues whatsoever.

I did see an anaesthetist, who was concerned about how easy it would (or wouldn't) be to do an epidural. The outcome of this was to try and give as much notice as possible if going down that route.

I didn't go down that route in the end, to be honest I wanted to avoid it as I don't like people touching my back anyway! I guess I was lucky it wasn't necessary.

Good luck!

Thanks so much everyone for all your responses, it's reassuring to hear your stories. I'll be sure to raise it at the booking apt.

@shnia great to hear your experience given you have also had the fusion! Thank you!
