Heard so many mixed things! Some saying you must do it, others saying why bother?!

I did initially but anything I bought or got gifted after the birth pretty much went straight on him out of the packaging.

Of course I washed them. I do this for my own clothes so why not for my own baby.

It's funny because in many European countries they will tell you that you need to not only wash them in special, hypoallergenic (!) baby washing powder but also (!!!) that you have to iron them till they are at least a year old. 🙈 Yep, I know, ridiculous. My friend still irons her 2 year old's clothes at midnight most nights. The only thing I ironed for my DS were his christening clothes 🤦🏻‍♀️

Sooo... standards vary, widely! 😅

You don't NEED to, but some people (babies, children and adults) can be sensitive to the chemicals that are present in freshly bought clothing and develop a rash, so need to wash them first.

Personally, I'm not so I don't. My partner is so he does. I'll likely wash our daughter's stuff before it's worn in case she takes after her dad.

You could opt not to and just see if baba has a reaction, or opt to wash from the get to, totally up to you.

I never did....I liked the fact they were still brand new for the first time being worn.

PumpkinFence · 17/11/2023 22:46

Always.
Factories, manufacturers spray heavy duty shit to stop insect infestations. Also have you seen the way clothes get piled on the floor/transported on dirty trolleys before they get hung up? On a new born’s skin? Nope.

cheeseandketchupsandwich · 17/11/2023 22:48

I did for my first child, did everything 'by the book'.

Recently had second and realised it makes no bloody difference. They'll soon be washed when they've been spat up and shat on.

QuestionableMouse · 17/11/2023 22:49

I wash all new clothes before I wear them.

NellyWest · 17/11/2023 22:50

wash before they come, spend ages folding it nicely into the drawers and then when they arrive find ANYTHING clean to put them in after the inevitable poonami.

Mazuslongtoenail · 17/11/2023 22:53

I didn’t. The midwife took the tags off and dressed my baby when he was born. 🤷🏼‍♀️

DramaAlpaca · 17/11/2023 23:11

Nope, it never occurred to me. I'd rather not make unnecessary work for myself. I did wash anything second hand though, to get rid of the smell of someone else's washing powder.

I hand washed all of my babies new clothing with Lux flakes and line dried them but that was 20+ years ago. Back then I was not given anything pre loved, everything was new but I still washed them. Now I would probably bung them in the washing machine with a bit of persil and chuck them in the tumble dryer whether they were new, pre loved or had been stored from a sibling.

I did for DC1 because I read it somewhere. Didn't bother for DC2. But some people wash all clothes and bedding before first use as adults so you'll get ever range of opinion.

Personally I've never washed anything new as an adult and no amount of stories on here about allegedly scary chemicals has changed my mind yet.

It's not just chemicals. It's dirty Dave scratching his arse and picking his nose before loading your towels from the factory to the shop. Seen it with my own eyes.

Yeah, I've heard that too. I remain unmoved!

I did but only because i'd read something on here from someone who had her own clothing line - she said she would never wear her own brand clothes without washing them due to how it's stored in the warehouse with mice running around/stuff sprayed on clothes so it put me off 😂
