Short femur - measuring one week behind at 16 weeks

I Went for a private scan last week at 16 weeks but the sonographer noted the femur was measuring a week behind. I had fertility treatment so know my dates are accurate.

Has anyone gone through similar and everything been fine? The sonographer didn’t seem concerned but google tells me it could indicate other problems.

Similar here at 16 weeks. How are you getting on? Have you had your 20 week scan?

Hi @Mimi0539 the 20 week scan went well - the length caught up and measured at 50th centile and no other concerns were found x

Oh that's amazing, what a relief for you and reassuring to hear. Hopefully we'll follow suit in a few weeks time. X

I'm glad I came across this. I'm now 16 weeks. Had my first scan at 13+6 my consultant didn't voice any concerns on short bones, said that the structure and development of baby was normal for that gestation in pregnancy and there was no major birth defects seen. I had another scan yesterday at 15+6, had to see a different consultant as mine is on annual leave. And this consultant yesterday told me that baby's legs & arms are measuring that of a 12 week fetus and the baby's chest is small so she won't survive after birth as she would struggle to breathe alone. But the person who scanned me before the consultant put the baby's limbs as measuring at 13+6 so I'm confused. This new consultant I saw yesterday said the baby's bones wont grow no more and suggested we terminate the pregnancy. But my argument was if I'm only 16 weeks then surely the baby still has time to grow right? I mean I'm on the small side myself at 5ft 2 & petite , baby's dad is 6ft. I was 5lb 14 at birth and my sons were all in the 6lb range at birth. Seeing this has given me a bit of hope that maybe.. just maybe our baby girl will be just fine.

Hi

Yes I did with my eldest. We were having extra scans at the time due to Zika and around the 20 week mark (it was 7 years ago so memory a bit hazy!) his femur was measuring below average.

Are they concerned? They never mentioned it to me but obviously I had my own concerns knowing it wasn't in the normal range.

He's absolutely fine now, loves running around playing rugby etc!
