slow rising HCG levels

Hello,

I was wondering if i could get anybodys opinion on the below please.

I have recently found out that I am pregnant. Over the weekend I had a tiny amount of spotting saturday evening and again sunday morning which then went away. I had some cramps on Monday morning (nothing major, felt like period cramps). A friend suggested I should get checked out so I spoke to my gp and I was referred to the early pregnancy unit. My last period was October 1st but I know I didn't ovulate until after the 23rd. I was getting faint lines on early response tests and did a digital pregnancy test over the weekend that said 1-2 weeks.

I had a blood test Monday which said my hcg was 70 and a repeat test today (48 hours later) that showed my level was 104. The person that rang with my results said that I'm not showing symptoms of ectopic but in her experience my hcg levels are too low for a viable pregnancy and that I should keep that in the back of my mind. I have repeat bloods on Friday and then they will make a decision about scanning me (although as far as I can work out I'd be too early to be able to see anything).

Has anybody else been through similar?

Hi I'm so sorry - I went through a similar experience with low and slow rising hCG and it was a blighted ovum rather than an ectopic.

If say you ovulated on 25 Oct, then you'd be three weeks post-ovulation now, or 21 days. One big research study suggested that an hCG level of at least 200 when 17 days post-ovulation is good in terms of prognosis for an ongoing pregnancy. The study was on ivf pregnancies where timings are more concrete than natural conception, but it's still relevant.

I was blindsided by my blighted ovum pregnancy - I hadn't really been aware of them previously. I really hope you get better news, but do guard your heart.

I know it's hard but try and remain calm for now. Everyone's body works differently, hopefully by your next appointment you've got better news. All the best x

@Rosemarypots , sorry to hear about yours and thank you for sharing your experience and the information. It's all a bit of a shock because I have been fine ever since the initial spotting. Although weirdly, I'm not sure they think the slotting has much to do with my slow rising hcg levels from what they were saying today. I think this is something they've picked up on whilst investigating it typically.

@ninnz thank you. It's hard to know whether to remain positive or whether to prepare myself for the worst.

@AODR do you mind me asking what your outcome was? I’m currently going through something very similar. I’m back tomorrow for more bloods

AODR · 27/12/2023 18:39

@Ncl31 , sadly my outcome was not great. My levels gradually got lower and lower and then I started bleeding and eventually miscarried. I just don't think the pregnancy ever got a foothold in my case.

@AODR im so sorry to hear that. I hope you manage to conceive again soon.

I have a feeling that is the way I’m going too. Hopefully I’ll know by tomorrow evening and can finally come to terms with it. Being in the time of unknown there’s a tiny part of me which is still hopeful.

AODR · 27/12/2023 19:05

@Ncl31 thank you. The one good thing was because my levels were not high, the miscarriage was not anything more than a period. (Well it was obviously but my head kind of just dealt with it as being a period because there wasn't an awful lot of bleeding).

Someone once told me during the waiting game to remain hopeful but guarded. It seemed to fair me well. I hope you do get a better outcome than me. Fingers crossed for you x
