Losing weight and early pregnancy

Hi all, I'm currently 5 weeks.
I'm just wondering has anyone received any advice regarding calories and early pregnancy? Do I need to be increasing calories?
I'm hungry ALL the time and no matter what I eat ( I devoured a large pizza on Saturday night ☺️ ) i still lost a lb . I've now lost another 2lbs so I've lost 3lbs in total this week since Saturday which does concern me as I'm thinking surely now is not the time to be losing weight now that I've got a life growing inside me.
I physically cannot eat any more food. I'm eating a substantial amount but cannot seem to stop losing weight. Since I found out I'm pregnant I've completely stopped eating cakes and biscuits ect ( pre diabetic pcos) limiting my sugar intake I think is probably contributing to the weight loss combined with pregnancy hormones increasing my appetite.
Is this something of concern?
Do I need to be increasing calories during first trimester?
I had an appointment with my gp yesterday for bloods and i brought up several concerns re progesterone levels , severe stomach cramping and intense trapped gas. GP seemed utterly useless and told me I need to go speak to my fertility clinic ( I had fertility treatment) she dosent deal with this which I found baffling that a gp dosent have any basic knowledge of pregnancy.
She couldn't even advise me what I could take during pregnancy for the pain so I figured asking her about my weight would be an utter waste of time

Hi, I had a similiar experience, I am overweight anyway but when I found out I was pregnant to now (i'm 18 weeks) i've lost 3lbs, i spoke to my gp and she told me not to worry as baby is fine and healthy and a good size. All scans have been on the mark in terms of dating and size. Your body is working overtime creating this life so just listen to your body, rest and eat as well as you can. You don't need extra calories until the 2nd and 3rd trimester and even then it is only an extra 200-300. You can read about this on the hse or nhs website.

Unless you were underweight or at the very bottom of the healthy weight range pre pregnancy then losing weight at this stage isn't an issue. Pregnancy just seems to have provided you with the boost you needed to cut out the excess sugar in the form of cake etc that you would normally consume. I wish my brain had done this, I couldn't stomach much other than total crap for the majority of my pregnancy! There is also really no need or reason to gain weight in the first trimester, average gain for a woman starting out in the 'healthy' weight range in the first 12 weeks is 2-4lbs which is nothing at all.
I'm currently 38+5 and have gained around a stone and a bit the entire time, for the simple reason I was at the very top of the overweight range when I got pregnant. Never been any concerns from gp, midwife or my consultant.

Hi, I'm similar to you in that it's early pregnancy and an IVF pregnancy so I'm on progesterone and estrogen. Progrestone slows down the metabolism and digestion so this is why it results in cramping/trapped gas and bloating. I've defo struggles with this and have found peppermint tea, foxes glacier mints and stretching lots before bed helps. Also making my last meal of the day super simple, like toast.

I have also lost a small amount but weight but not worried as I have totally gone off chocolate and cake... I could easily devour 2 choc bars through the day and something sweet in an evening normally 😂

I was told by the GP not to eat for 2 but to eat while I can as there could come a point when I can't hold food down, defo have started with some aversions, for me I go from not feeling hungry to starving.

The body will naturally gain some weight due to the extra water retention/blood and then the baby as that develops so don't worry if there are points its does jump.

The baby will pull on your reserves first, so aslong as you weren't underweight before then you should be fine.

Good luck with your pregnancy x

You don't technically need to increase your calorie intake until 3rd trimester (and then only by something like 200 calories per day).

If you're feeling hungry then eat more vegetables (a variety) lean protein including legumes and whole grains - if you can! And drink plenty of water.

Try for little and often to avoid big blood sugar spikes. It's great you've reduced sugary snacks.

If you normally drink alcohol then giving that up is a big calorie reduction/contributes to weight loss.

As PP said unless you were already underweight or the bottom end of normal there's unlikely to be an issue - keep up your nutrient intake.

Re bloating/gas/cramping- are you on any medication? Have you spoken to your fertility clinic? - could any of this be a side effect of your procedure or Meds? (I was v bloated in 1st trimester while ok progesterone pessaries after precious MCs)

What makes you concerned about low progesterone?

Is this your first pregnancy?

You don’t need more calories until your final trimester and even then it’s only 200 calories a day, about a slice of toast.

plenty of women suffer with HG and lose stones during their pregnancies and their babies are fine. Just eat healthily in accordance with your appetite, your body will do the rest.
