28 weeks - pain deep inside buttocks

Hi,

After a problem-free pregnancy I am experiencing some pain deep inside my buttocks which I am assuming is a form of pregnancy-related pelvic pain. I am not getting any other pain in the lower back or pelvic region aside from a dull ache. The pain in my buttocks gets worse as the day goes on and especially if I've been sitting for a while.

I know I have to walk around more during work hours, but are there any other things I can do to minimise this pain and is it normal to have the pain inside the muscles of the buttocks?

Thanks in advance,
O
28 weeks today

I pulled a muscle in my bum cheek when I was about 36 wks

It was very painful and made me walk with a limp, but one session with an osteopath sorted it out.

To this day I have no idea how I managed to do it

It's quite possible that it's your cyatic nerve, I had trouble with that when i was pregnant and It came and went, but i found i kep agrivating it, turning my bump over in the night. Sure you doc will be able to diagnose if not offer a solution. All the best with it, adele

Hi, Thanks. Yes, I checked with the midwife and doctor and she said I had the very common "posterior pelvic pain" and that acupuncture and actually giving birth (!!) would help. Osteo is a good idea. Any ideas anyone for stretches I could do to alleviate the discomfort? O

Yeah, i wasn't told about stretches, just that there wasn't much i could do about it as it was a nerve. But yours could be different, fingers crossed you find something.

Sounds very much like sciatica - I get it loads - especially when I hav e been sittign down - particualry on the floor fro some reason.

You need to strtch it out - but I can't give you my exercises becaue I'm not sure how safe they are if you are pregnant.
Good luck.

Hi, thanks, no it's not sciatica. That was ruled out. O

Sounds like sacro-iliac joint pain - quite common in pregnancy. It's like SPD but rather than affecting the front pelvic joints, it's affects the back ones. It's due to the joints/ligaments loosening ready for birth. You must be careful not to overextend in the pelvic region so that after birth it does all go back correctly. Gentle exercise like swimming might help. The buttock pain - as deep in as you can imagine - is classic for SI pain. There isn't really a massive amount you can do but accupuncture could help with pain relief. Have you asked to be referred to an obstetric physio?

I'll second weegle. Sounds like classic si joint problem. If yo udo swim, avoid brast stroke as the leg action can aggrevate it. Otherwise, definitely see an obstetric physio. Also, avoid crossing your legs- it de-stabilises the pelvis. Put your feet up aswell - takes the pressure off. The obs physio will also give you a support belt but I wouldn't advise just buying one as they need to be used correctly or they can be counter productive. Poor you - it is horrible having si pain!

Ouch, I had this for the last few months of pregnancy with DD3 and could barely walk somedays. I saw an osteopath who specialized in working with pregnant women (recommended by midwife) and saw her maybe three times in the run up to birth.

hi Orissiah - I third what some have said classic SI pain. I am 22 weeks with no 3 have had it all 3 times. I'm in bloody agony right now am standing rather than sitting at the pc right now. Yes the pain is right inside your buttocks more on my right, it also radiates down my hips and I have aches in the front too.

Sitting for a while and lying is hardest, turning over in bed is horrid. Things I have found help a lot are a deep bath with some lavender oil in it, sitting on a gym ball instead of a chair and generally just taking it easy. Mine will go practically as some as the placenta is out but until then it's a pain in the ass literally. I have had physio and the belt but it didn't really work
