Can anyone help me? I have never had any children / never been pregnant, and although I am a nurse and I did a maternity placement, it was about 8 years ago now...

A relative of mine has just been told to go in to hospital asap because when they were listening to the heart beat it apparently was "dipping" and "going quiet". Obviously this has panicked my relative and as they are in the hospital now, we can't get hold of them to find out what is happening. What does this mean? Is it possibly that the cord is around the babies neck and causing major problems? Is it possibly that baby was moving out of range of the machine they were using? I have gone completely blank....

help please....

It could be any number of things I'm afraid.

How pregnant is she?

An erratic heartbeat (e.g. too slow, too fast etc.) can be a sign of the baby being stressed, but she is in the right place if anything is going on.

Fingers crossed for you all

I have no professional knowledge at all but this'll act as a bump for your post anyway. I think both the situations you outline are possible - try to focus on the fact though that they could hear the heartbeat and that the hospital is the right place to be in this case. How many weeks is she?

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 11/03/2008 16:55

When is the baby due?

It could be decellerations, it could be the baby has moved and they can't find the heart beat due to location and not because it isn't there.

Hope all is okay.

Tiggly · 11/03/2008 16:59

She is due in about 6 weeks. The decellerations had crossed my mind. I am praying that it's just the little tike has ducked out of the range of the moniotoring device. If it is decellerations would they deliver her today?
thanks for everyone reading this thread! Reassurance is requested!

34 weeks is good - I think if there is a problem then they would look to deliver if the baby was safer out than in iyswim.

NatalieJane · 11/03/2008 17:04

What Northern said.

Try not to worry (I know, easier said than done), 34 weeks is very good if they do have to deliver today. Hopefully they will find the baby just wasn't playing ball today

Let us know how she goes on won't you?

Tiggly · 11/03/2008 17:06

Thank you both, will keep you posted. Much appreciatedx

It can be hard to find the heartbeat - when I was in labour with dd3 the midwife at the hospital had a real job finding it with the hand held device - nearly giving me heart failure in the progress. She found it eventually and it was fine - but through the whole labour she really had to hunt about for that one spot where she could get a loud and clear signal. I've no idea why this was.

ooooh, I saw something similar sounding on home birth diaries on Discovery channel at the weekend. A lady was referred to hospital due to what seems to be the same thing. Everything was fine - mum had been overdoing it.

She was put on a monitor for a while and then sent home.

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 11/03/2008 18:45

My son was having decellerations (sp is wrong) and is now a healthy chap about to be seven.

Keep is posted.

Tiggly · 11/03/2008 18:53

Hi, She was put on a monitor and the first print out was good and showed nothing to cause concern. They are going to repeat it, and all being well they will release her home tonight! Much to our relief! The midwife apparently said this can be quite common in the latter stages of pregnancy!Phew! Thank you to everyone! Fingers crossed for her!

Hurrah! That sounds really good - hope she's home soon

NAB3wishesfor2008 · 11/03/2008 18:58

I don't want to rain on your parade but once she is home please have her keep an eye on baby's movements.

I was 1 day off 38 weeks when we couldn't get any response from baby. Went to hospital and had a trace done. Was due back next day for bloods and asked to come in early for trace to be done. This showed cause for concern but eventaully I was allowed to go for a scan. This highlighted that baby was in distress and he was delivered by emergency section that day.

Turns out things weren't as great as thought the day before but the trace went missing....

I am sure it will all be fine for your relative but please get her to count movements as I would hate to not say anything and then have the baby go into distress.
