Fragmin injections bruising

Hi, I am currently 26 weeks with twins and started fragmin early due to blood pressure being a bit high (shouldn't have started til 28 weeks)
I had fragmin injections after my last baby only for a week after delivery and I did them in my stomach had small bruises but nothing terrible, I'm doing them in my thighs this time, don't feel comfortable doing it in my stomach and I'm bruising so much 😱 not painful, apart from one where I think I may have gone too close to muscle? I read somewhere that can happen 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣 but any advice on how to stop them bruising so much? I have to do this until after my twins are born so by then my legs will be black and blue if I can't get better at it 🤣 🤦🏻‍♀️

I had to have fragmin injections for 6 weeks after giving birth to DS. I injected them into my thighs as it was easier and my stomach felt sore still.

My thighs looked similar to yours with the bruising and I remember a couple that were especially sore and had massive swollen bruises where I must have gone too deep or something. Because the Fragmin so stingy when it goes in, I used to rub the injection site after doing it but a health visitor told me not too as this can make bruising significantly worse (after I'd already been doing it for 5 weeks 🤦🏼‍♀️). Do you do the same? - maybe this is also causing the bruising for you? Though I think some bruising, especially if having to inject for a while, is to be expected unfortunately x

No I aren't rubbing it, I learnt my lesson with that when I was doing it in my stomach after my daughter 😂 so it's not that... I am pinching the skin though but then letting go as the injection goes in... Maybe I should just stick it straight in without holding the skin 🤷🏻‍♀️ I don't know. The one I did yesterday bled for the rest of the day and night aswell, I did It around 3.30pm and woke up at 4am with my leg full of dried blood 🤦🏻‍♀️that's never happened before 🤔😂

I was told not to touch it at all. So no pinching the skin to inject and no touching afterwards.

Personally I could do it if I gathered up my skin. I'd rather bruise and be able to carry on than get a dvt so bruises it was

I used to hold an ice pack on my skin for 30 secs before I injected which helped numb things a bit, and then hold it there again for 2 mins after, mainly because I'm a big wuss!

Amyy44 · 13/11/2023 16:09

Maybe I'll give just sticking it in a go then, I was just going off what I did when doing it in my stomach. I'll try the ice aswell 😂 I just don't feel black and blue thighs are a nice look but oh well we keep going 😂

@Amyy44 I had to do fragmin with my twins and 6 weeks after I didn’t want to do them in my stomach just didn’t feel right so done them in my thighs and a couple of times I had bad bruising and a lump come up but I think I pushed it in to much

Hi OP, I am a nurse and have given these injections to patients and myself. I would offer the following:

Ideally give the injection into the abdomen as it is generally absorbed better there (completely understand why you are reluctant to do so however).

As stated above don't rub.

Give the injection at 90 degrees and don't expel aay air bubbles before administration (doing this means that the heparin ends up on the outside of the needle and so is distributed closer to the skin than intended).

Rotate the site of injection - imagine a clock face on your abdomen or alternate thighs and rotate around the thigh.

If you are doing all the above then there isn't much more you can do. Honestly the picture you posted isn't terrible. Good luck.
