Where are you flying to?
Work or holiday?

Can you call the 24hr maternity triage for your hospital and speak to a midwife for advice?

Don't panic. Put a pad in, keep note of when you do, and how quickly it fills (if it does). Take your maternity notes with you.

Where are you going? City/rural? Do you have health insurance?

MrsWhites · 12/11/2023 08:33

Where are you going? If you are going away on a holiday I would probably ring your travel insurance and delay whilst you go and get checked out.

If going to stay with family where you’d have access to a hospital easily etc then I’d be more inclined to go and see if it was a little one off bleed.

I had spotting in early pregnancy, turned out to be nothing x

SylvieLaufeydottir · 12/11/2023 08:34

It's up to you, and depends where you're going and what insurance you have.

If you've already had a scan and seen a healthy baby at that gestation then the odds are in favour of its being harmless and nothing. If, god forbid, it indicates a miscarriage, seeking medical input can't change things. EPU will most likely be shut right now and won't see you until Monday anyway.

Thank you, in a panic I just told them I was 13 weeks pregnant and was bleeding and if I could be seen but didn't mention the airport at all. I will call them back.
They said I couldn't be seen until I was 18 weeks further, have to go to A and E and can't get a scan until tomorrow

Also - in your notes folder have you got a number to call in case of bleeding? Or if you look up your hospital's guidelines for spotting in pregnancy. Contact your midwife if you can.

LividMush · 12/11/2023 08:36

It could be something or it could be nothing.

I’ll be brutally honest, I wouldn’t want to be on a long flight in case it was something.

I’d delay the flight and go and get checked. I’d rather lose the flight money than find myself in a position on a plane that doesn’t bear imagining.

I had a cervical ectropion that made me spot through pregnancy. He is three now.

I also had several pregnancies where that wasn’t the case. I wouldn’t have wanted to be in an airport, on a plane or abroad at the time.

Wishing you the best of luck.

Rosiiee · 12/11/2023 08:38

Difficult one. I’d probably try to move the flight to tomorrow (hefty fee I know) but as pp said I’d be worried of something happening on the flight or in the US where healthcare is crazy expensive! Can you present to A&E? I know where I am the major maternity hospital will scan any time of day. Perhaps ring around and drive to a hospital that will?

That's what I was thinking, if it is God forbid a miscarriage I'm scared of it happening while on the flight.

I bled throughout this pregnancy but always brown, today is the first day I'm actually getting red blood and not just while wiping

Thank you for sharing your experience

Alternatively, I’d lie and tell them you’re in pain. They’ll have to do something right there and then and you can hopefully make your new flight.

RogersOrganismicProcess · 12/11/2023 08:50

Keeping everything crossed for you op. Have they given you any indication about why you might be spotting, that might explain the bleeding too? For example my friend had a heart shaped uterus.

If not I’d be worried about a potential miscarriage in the air.

Thank you for your kind words!

Not really, they told me sometimes it's nothing and something it's something to be concerned.
I had a scan at 9 weeks and the sonographer pointed to implantation bleeding and asked if it was the reason why I was there that day (it was). She didn't point out anything else.

Been trying to call the hospital back but their line is busy.

That's my concern exactly.
My family doesn't even know I'm pregnant yet so I need to make something up

I was in the same situation. Spotting at 13 weeks and due to fly to the states. I'd previously miscarried at 13 weeks so that made me extra cautious. In fact I assumed I was miscarrying. I didn't fly. Luckily we were able to switch names on the ticket and my MIL went with my husband instead.
I ended not miscarrying despite bleeding and cramping. I'm glad I didn't fly.

stayathomegardener · 12/11/2023 10:42

Hmmm I probably wouldn't fly that distance in these circumstances.
It's a be dammed if you do and dammed if you don't situation.
The only thing I will say is as an ex air stewardess we used to find flights would bring on a late period so if something is going on I'd be extra cautious.
Best to get a check up for reassurance and go later in the week.
