When to tell work - new job

Hi everyone,

I've just found out that I'm pregnant. It has been 5 weeks since my last period.

I quit my job 3 weeks ago and I have a 3 month notice period so I'm not due to start my new job until late January 2024. I'll be approximately 15 weeks pregnant when I start the new job.

When is the best time to tell my new employer?

TIA

Congrats on your pregnancy and new job! I think it largely depends on what kind of work you do, if it's quite active / strenuous work you may want to tell your new employer straight away so you can have an assessment to ensure your safety at work. However, if you're more office based / not on your feet all day you could leave it a bit long until you've settled into your role and got a feel for the new place.

I think legally you have to tell your employer by the end of your 25th week, so you'd have a good 10 weeks at your new job (if you can hide bump etc) for that time, and if that's what you choose to do 😊

Congratulations on the new job and pregnancy!

I was in the same situation as you and left it as long as I could before saying anything. This is my second so I had to tell them a little earlier than I wanted because I was showing, ideally I wanted to wait for my probation review after 3 months but I only got to 2 months when I was 15 weeks pregnant 😂 but I used that time to prove myself as much as possible. In my first pregnancy I didn’t show until much later, maybe 5/6 months.

Best of luck with everything!

This happened to me. I think I ended up saying around 15 weeks to my excellent line manager and then to the wider team around 20. My top tip is - start wearing slightly baggy clothes when you start. They’ll hide the bump better when it appears! Good luck x

@PennyProud I was in this exact situation. I told the new employer the week before I started. I was 14 weeks at the time. Phoned them. I just wanted to get it over and done with, not have to worry about it when I started and give them enough time to start plotting the maternity leave cover etc.

Congrats!
