27 weeks measuring above 90th centile

I'm 27 weeks tomorrow and just had my check up with the midwife and my bump is measuring above 90th percentile so I've been referred for a growth scan for them to get a more accurate measurement of just baby.

The midwife said it could just be cause baby is long which would make sense as both me and DH are tall, but it could also indicate gestational diabetes which I'm feeling really down about as I've already got Strep B and I'm Rh- with a RH+ baby I just feel like its my luck ill have GD.

Does anyone have an positive stories of baby being above 90th percentile?

Following. I had mine yesterday and baby was measuring 97th percentile / off the chart!!

Midwife did not seem concerned and I've not been referred for any scans though? Little worried now.

I'm 37 weeks pregnant. Rh- with Rh+ baby, placenta previa, antenatal haemorrhages, group B strep +, very severe morning sickness. Sending solidarity! I was tested for gestational diabetes but thankfully negative.

I wouldn't put much stock in fundal height. Mine have been, in time order, 10th, 97th, 25th and 60th. Growth scans have also ranged between 40th and 80th. The margin for error is huge, latest was +/- 400g (almost 1lb!). I wouldn't panic until growth scan confirms big baby, and even then I've know people be told its a 10lb baby and is delivered at 7/8 lb. They're best guesses.

@freya34 I've read that its usually if they measure big on two occasions that's when they normally refer you for growth scan. I think my midwife just has because she knows how anxious I've been in the past.

@FlyingHighFlyingLow wow those are huge variations aren't they! My husband was 10lb when he was born!

I have had had growth scans for a different issue and mine is consistently measuring in the same high percentiles for everything. Ditto for estimated weight and fundal height. I have tested negative for GD twice. Seems some babies just track big?

Moomoomomo · 08/11/2023 11:51

My third was massive, bless her. She was 10lbs. She was measuring above the 95th centile consistently. I had no GD, she is just built big. She is 6 now and very tall, she has been taller than her big sister (1.5 years older) since she was 18 months. I'd previously had tiny babies so it was a bit of a shocker!

She was also by far my easiest labour. Literally 1 hour and 20 minutes start to finish with no pain relief. She did look a very squashed up though!

@Moomoomomo this sounds exactly the same as my husband! He was the third son and he's way taller than his older brothers, also weighed 10lbs. My MIL said his shoulders got stuck! I think our son is going to be just like him! Hopefully it is that and I don't have GD.

My fundal height consistently measured 3 weeks ahead from 28 weeks. I was sent for growth scans and all predicted 90th centile baby, which led to me being induced on my due date. Baby was 75th centile so those scans can definitely be inaccurate :)

They wouldn’t test me for GD as I didn’t fall into a risk category, but in my case it was just a larger than average, but not as big as predicted healthy baby :)

So I'm 27 weeks tomorrow and mine was 29. From reading it says it can be out either way by 2cm. So its not like its insanely out. Guess I'll find out more at the scan and give up the chocolate in the meantime!

I’ve just measured over the 97th centile at 31 weeks and the midwife didn’t seem at all concerned. I didn’t get referred for a growth scan either but sort of wishing I had been for peace of mind.

GH9687 · 08/11/2023 23:10

I measured above the 97th twice and was sent for a growth scan. We are both very tall so I want expecting a small baby but it was worrying! Had the scan which put me nicely on the 50th line, I was told that my fundal measurements would just likely carry on following the 97th curve and that would be perfectly fine. I haven't been sent for another scan as my growth has continued to follow the trend! I think my fundal measurements are off as I have a long torso plus I've never had a flat stomach!

Bims2019 · 09/11/2023 08:21

At my 31 week midwife appointment last week I measured at 10th centile, which was only half a cm more than my 28 appt so I was sent for a growth scan. The scan then measured me at 97th centile, so completely the opposite and they ended up testing me for GD! I was told no news is good news so think I'm now in the clear, but it didn't seem very accurate and a lot of worry over some very different measurements. My husband and I aren't tall so I'm not expecting a big baby, but who knows!

Hope your scan goes well, it doesn't necessarily mean you have GD but if you do at least they can support you 🙂

At my midwife appointment last Monday I was measuring above the 97th percentile at 28 weeks. I was referred for a growth scan (I was having these anyway for a different issue) and the baby on the scan was measuring on the 8th centile so very small. I think measurements can be so wrong.

MrsJ6921 · 09/11/2023 09:16

I’ve had a similar experience and if I’m honest at first I was really upset.

I had a different midwife who didn’t really say much at my 27 week appointment and due to an issue with my badger notes I didn’t have access to my GROW chart but baby was measuring two weeks ahead at 29 weeks - I didn’t know this until my 31 week appt.

I had another midwife appt at 30+2 but bump was measuring 30.5 but the system rounds the measurement up so I was again measuring bigger (but technically wasn’t as her growth had steadied).

I was subsequently sent for a growth scan two days later where baby was said to be measuring on the 95th percentile at 4lbs but was not considered a large baby but her tummy was slightly larger. The Sonographer did state that most babies growth steadies and it could be case of she just had a growth spurt at 27 weeks.

I was then referred to be tested for GD which was yesterday - I’m currently awaiting my results but I have no risk factors, I’m not overweight, no parents have diabetes etc.

I was however 23 inches when born so it could be a case of having a long baby and both my DH, Dad and Brother are all between 6/6.4ft.

TunnocksTCake · 09/11/2023 14:14

I've had this with both my pregnancies - first DD was measuring 2 weeks ahead consistently, I did the GD test which was negative and then had a scan which showed she was long in the leg but had a small head, so easy to birth! Cant remember centiles for that one, but she is a tall child - long and skinny.

This pregnancy - currently 31+4 - measured at 28 week appt and am measuring 4 weeks ahead, so off the chart centile wise! Due to prev history and not having as many appointments this time they have just immediately referred me for a growth scan which will be at 36 weeks. If it is a big baby I will likely have a section.

I think these fundal height measurements are all based on the 'average' woman so anyone significantly taller will measure big anyway, surely? For some its fluid, for some its baby position, there are lots of things it could be so dont panic. And measuring big is better than small I always think.

I am 5'11 and DH is 6'2 & he was BIG when he was born so I am sort of expecting a larger baby with this one being a boy. I also have Strep B (well to be confirmed at 36 weeks!)
