Hello,

I had my GTT test this morning. The finger prick reading was 5.6 - that's pretty high isn't it?

I don't have my final results yet after the glucose drink etc.

Was that your fasting reading? At my trust fasting should be below 5.3 and post eating is 7.8.

If you are diagnosed I was absolutely miserable for the first couple of days, but it honestly does get better.

The GD UK Facebook group is great (although personally I find it a bit obsessive so I end up getting stressed / too reliant on cheese to be healthy) so I had to ‘mute’ it, but it’s a really good starting point.

Yes the fasting reading was 5.6 on the finger prick test. Not got the full results as she took a full blood test after this. And then another one 2 hours later - but by the finger prick alone I'm guessing it was high.

Just had such a miserable pregnancy and I just really didn't want this on top :(

@freya34 my trust 5.6 for fasting or above is classed as GDM. Don’t worry yet, wait for the blood results first. But there’s a lot of help out there and it doesn’t have to be miserable once you get your head around it

@Mummyme87 oh that's totally rubbish, just want to cry :-( thank you! I'll try not to get too down until I hear for sure

@freya34 My fasting results were the same at you. They gave me a device to monitor my blood sugar for a couple of weeks. The fasting one kept being issue and rarely under 5.2 so I ended up taking insulin in the evening. I manage the rest only with diet. Don't worry, it is manageable. I was a bit annoyed at first but if managed well, then that won't cause any problem.

I'm so confused by GD! I done my glucose test last week. They said my fasting bloods were 5.1 which they consider too low so they've gave me a monitor to test 4 times a day.

My bloods seem normal? Not too high or too low so I'm not sure why 5.1 is considered too low for fasting

Below is an example of my bloods over the past 2 days.

@flowerpot258 Interesting. Are you in the UK? For fasting anything between 4 and 5.2 is normal, above is high. After meals, anything between 4 and 7.7 is normal. It's bizarre they told you that 5.1 is too low as it definitely isn't.

flowerpot258 · 10/11/2023 08:57

@TTCbaby2023 - yeah I'm in the UK. Just seems weird. I did find this on google( but that's the only thing that suggests 5.1 is low and I'm not even sure where this info is from.

I wonder if my midwife has somehow read similar and just decided that I have GD based on that and then made a referral.

I did say to the diabetic nurse that my levels after the glucose drink were normal and it was just the fasting bloods they thought were low but she didn't seem bothered. Just basically said they've referred me so obviously want to keep an eye on it.
I'm hoping when I speak to them again and they see my bloods over a week or 2 they might just tell me to stop testing (probably not but I can be hopeful Grin)

@flowerpot258 I have to check my blood 4 times a day and put my numbers into an app. As I mentioned above, the normal levels are fasting: 4 to 5.2 / After meal (1h) 4 to 7.7.
My levels after food were also ok, it was just the fasting one that was slightly elevated which is common with GD as the fasting number is more influenced by the hormones and that is why you have been referred. The numbers you gave above seem high for after food and is not what is used in the UK.
